I Opened the Basement Door… and Realized Daniel Had Lied About Everything

PART 2 — I Opened the Basement Door… and Realized Daniel Had Lied About Everything

The smell was so strong that I immediately covered my nose.

Grace didn’t seem bothered.

She simply smiled and squeezed my hand.

“Mom is down here.”

My heart was pounding.

“Grace, sweetheart, your mommy died. Remember?”

She looked at me strangely.

“No, she didn’t.”

Emily appeared behind us.

She was holding a small stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy says we’re not supposed to talk about Mommy.”

I slowly turned toward her.

“Why?”

She looked toward the darkness.

“Because she gets angry when we’re loud.”

A chill ran through me.

I looked at the basement stairs.

The air was cold.

Too cold.

I switched on the light.

Nothing happened.

The bulb was dead.

I took out my phone and turned on the flashlight.

“Stay behind me.”

We walked down slowly.

The smell became stronger with every step.

At the bottom, I saw old furniture covered with sheets.

Boxes.

Children’s toys.

And photographs scattered across the floor.

Then I heard something.

A faint scratching sound.

I froze.

“Did you hear that?”

Grace nodded.

“Mom does that sometimes.”

My stomach turned.

I followed the sound toward the back of the basement.

There was another locked door.

I tried the handle.

It wouldn’t move.

Grace whispered:

“That’s where Mom lives.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

Before she could answer, I heard a soft voice from behind the door.

“Grace?”

I nearly dropped my phone.

The little girl smiled.

“See? I told you.”

I backed away.

“That can’t be…”

The voice came again.

“Grace, is Daddy home?”

I immediately called Daniel.

He didn’t answer.

I called again.

Still nothing.

Then I heard movement behind the door.

Someone was crying.

I looked at the girls.

“Who is in there?”

Grace whispered:

“Mommy.”

I grabbed the door handle and pulled.

It was locked.

I searched through the boxes until I found a ring of old keys.

One key fit.

The lock clicked.

I opened the door.

And a woman was sitting on the floor.

Alive.

Weak.

Terrified.

Her hair was tangled, her face painfully thin.

But the moment she looked at the girls, she started crying.

“My babies…”

Emily screamed:

“Mommy!”

She ran into the woman’s arms.

I stood completely frozen.

The woman looked at me.

Then she whispered:

“You’re Daniel’s new wife.”

I couldn’t speak.

“Who are you?”

She stared at me.

“I am Daniel’s wife.”

My heart stopped.

“But Daniel told me you died four years ago.”

She shook her head.

“He lied.”

I stepped backward.

“Why?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because four years ago, I discovered what Daniel had been doing.”

“What?”

She looked toward the basement.

“He wasn’t protecting the girls from me.”

She pointed toward the boxes.

“He was hiding me from everyone else.”

I felt sick.

“Why would he do that?”

She whispered:

“Because he wanted everyone to believe I was dead.”

Then she told me the truth.

Daniel had been involved in a financial scheme with several people.

When his wife discovered it, she threatened to expose him.

Instead of letting her leave with the children, he staged a story about a fatal car accident.

He had forged documents.

Paid someone to confirm the story.

And hidden her in the basement.

For four years.

My hands began shaking.

“How did you survive?”

She looked at the girls.

“They kept me alive.”

Then she pointed toward a small ventilation opening.

“Every night, when Daniel was asleep, they secretly brought me food.”

I looked at Emily and Grace.

They had been carrying their mother’s secret for years.

Then I heard the front door upstairs slam.

Daniel was home.

The woman grabbed my wrist.

“Please.”

Her voice trembled.

“You have to get my children out before he finds us.”

I looked toward the basement stairs.

Footsteps were approaching.

Slowly.

Then Daniel’s voice echoed through the house.

“Girls?”

The children froze.

Daniel called again.

“Where are you?”

I looked at the terrified woman.

Then at the girls.

And finally at the basement door.

I suddenly realized something even more frightening.

Daniel hadn’t come home because he knew what we’d discovered.

He had come home because someone had already warned him.

And as his footsteps reached the top of the basement stairs…

I heard him whisper:

“I knew this day would come.”
