PART 2 — Lauren Told Me Who Andrew Really Was… and I Finally Understood What My Lies Had Cost Her
Lauren sat across from me without saying a word.
I could hear the refrigerator humming behind us.
Finally, she looked directly into my eyes.
“His name is Andrew.”
I swallowed.
“How long have you known him?”
“Three years.”
My chest tightened.
“Three years?”
She nodded.
“And the two of you…”
“No.”
Her answer came quietly.
“No, James. Andrew isn’t my lover.”
I stared at her.
“Then why was he holding your hand?”
She looked down at her wedding ring.
“Because I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
She raised her eyes.
“Of finally leaving you.”
Those words hit harder than I expected.
“You were planning to leave me?”
“I already decided.”
I couldn’t speak.
Then Lauren reached beneath the table and pulled out a folder.
She placed it between us.
Inside were printed emails, hotel receipts, photographs, and dates.
My dates.
My secrets.
My lies.
I recognized almost every page.
My hands started shaking.
“How did you get these?”
Lauren gave a sad smile.
“I didn’t need to hire a detective.”
She paused.
“You were careless.”
I remembered the phone I thought I’d deleted.
The credit-card statements I assumed she’d never examine.
The hotel receipt I blamed on a business meeting.
Suddenly, every excuse I’d ever used sounded pathetic.
“You knew all these years?”
“I knew enough.”
“Then why didn’t you confront me?”
“Because I did once.”
I looked at her.
She continued.
“You told me I was imagining things.”
I remembered that night.
I had accused her of being insecure.
She had cried.
And I had walked away.
At the time, I thought I’d won the argument.
Now I realized I had simply taught her to stop asking questions.
Lauren wiped a tear from her cheek.
“I spent years wondering what was wrong with me.”
“There was nothing wrong with you.”
She shook her head.
“You don’t get to say that now.”
I lowered my eyes.
She was right.
Then she told me about Andrew.
“He’s a counselor.”
I looked up.
“He helped me after I finally admitted that your affairs had destroyed my confidence.”
I felt ashamed.
“He never touched me romantically.”
“He helped me understand that I was allowed to choose what happened next.”
I looked at the divorce papers inside the folder.
“You were really going to leave?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Next month.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted one final month without another fight.”
Then she said something I’ll never forget.
“I wanted to remember who I was before I became the woman who spent every night wondering where her husband really was.”
I started crying.
For years, I had told myself my affairs didn’t matter because I came home.
But I finally understood something.
Coming home isn’t the same as being faithful.
Paying bills isn’t the same as loving someone.
And raising children doesn’t erase betrayal.
Then Lauren slid one final photograph across the table.
It showed me outside a hotel.
But this time, there was something different.
Someone else was standing behind me.
A man I recognized immediately.
My business partner.
Lauren looked at me.
“There’s something else you don’t know.”
“What?”
“Your business partner has been helping you hide your affairs.”
I stared at the photograph.
She continued:
“And he has been hiding something from you too.”
My heart sank.
“What?”
Lauren slowly opened another envelope.
Inside was a bank statement.
Money had been transferred from our joint business account to an unknown company.
Repeatedly.
For years.
And the signature authorizing those transfers…
was mine.
Except I had never signed them.
Lauren whispered:
“James, I think you’ve been betrayed by someone you trusted too.”
For the first time, I understood exactly what betrayal felt like.
Not because my wife held another man’s hand.
But because I had spent years believing I was the one controlling the lies.
I wasn’t.
And the person who had been helping me hide my secrets…
had been using those secrets against me all along.
