PART 2 — THE WOMAN MY HUSBAND NAMED ON OUR ANNIVERSARY FLIGHT
I slowly sat back down.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t even breathe.
Adrian’s voice continued through the cabin speakers, calm and professional.
But I wasn’t listening to his announcement anymore.
I was thinking about one name.
A name that belonged to someone who had disappeared from our lives six years earlier.
Someone I believed would never be part of our story again.
My husband’s first wife.
Sophie.
I had never met her.
Adrian told me she had died suddenly six years ago, shortly before we became engaged.
I had asked questions back then.
He always gave me the same answer.
“It was complicated.”
I never pushed.
Until that night.
Because Adrian had just said her name in front of an entire airplane.
I looked toward the front of the cabin.
A flight attendant was walking down the aisle.
I caught her attention.
“Excuse me,” I whispered. “Who is Sophie?”
The woman’s expression changed.
She glanced toward the cockpit.
Then back at me.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
My stomach tightened.
“Yes, you do.”
She hesitated.
Then quietly said, “Ma’am, please remain seated.”
That made everything worse.
Why would a flight attendant look frightened?
Then Adrian spoke again.
“This evening is about second chances.”
My hands began trembling.
“Six years ago, I lost someone I thought I would never see again.”
A strange silence spread through the cabin.
Then he continued.
“But tonight, she’s here.”
I felt the blood drain from my face.
I looked around desperately.
Who was she?
Where was she sitting?
Then a woman three rows ahead slowly stood.
She turned around.
And I recognized her immediately.
Not because I had ever met her.
But because I had seen her face.
Hundreds of times.
In the old photographs Adrian kept locked inside a drawer.
Sophie.
She was alive.
Very much alive.
And she was looking directly at me.
My heart pounded.
She walked toward my seat.
When she reached me, she stopped.
Then she whispered the words that made my entire marriage feel like a lie.
“Claire, I’m sorry.”
I stared at her.
“For what?”
She glanced toward the cockpit.
“For helping Adrian hide the truth from you.”
My mouth went dry.
“What truth?”
Sophie took a shaky breath.
Then she handed me a small envelope.
“This is why he brought me onto this flight.”
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
And on the back was a date.
Our wedding date.
My hands started shaking violently.
Because the photograph had been taken twelve years earlier…
The same year Adrian and I first met.
And standing beside him in that photograph was Sophie.
But that wasn’t what terrified me.
It was the person standing between them.
Someone I knew.
Someone who had been part of our marriage from the very beginning.
And suddenly, I understood why Adrian had chosen our anniversary flight to reveal everything.
He wasn’t surprising me.
He was preparing me.
Because before the plane landed…
I was going to learn the real reason Sophie had disappeared six years ago.
And why Adrian had been lying to me ever since.
