MY MOM’S SECRET CHANGED EVERYTHING I KNEW ABOUT NOAH

PART 2 — MY MOM’S SECRET CHANGED EVERYTHING I KNEW ABOUT NOAH

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.

Mom kept holding my hands, but they were trembling so badly that I could feel it.

“What are you talking about?” I whispered.

She looked toward the locked bedroom door as if she was afraid someone might hear us.

“Before you were born,” she said, “I knew Noah’s family.”

My heart began pounding.

“You knew his parents?”

“Yes. But that’s not the whole truth.”

She wiped a tear from her cheek.

“Your father and I were already married when Noah was born. His mother was my closest friend.”

I stared at her, confused.

“Then why have you always acted strangely around him?”

Mom lowered her eyes.

“Because I made a promise twelve years ago.”

“What promise?”

She finally looked at me.

“That I would never tell you what happened.”

My stomach tightened.

Mom explained that when Noah was six, his parents had gone through an incredibly difficult period. His father had been seriously injured, and his mother had been struggling to care for him and Noah.

One night, Noah’s mother came to Mom desperate for help.

“She asked me to protect Noah if anything ever happened to her,” Mom said.

“But what does that have to do with me?”

Mom took a shaky breath.

“Everything.”

Then she revealed something I had never imagined.

Years earlier, Noah’s mother had discovered that someone in their extended family had been trying to take advantage of Noah because of his disability.

There had been money involved.

Documents.

A family inheritance.

And someone had planned to convince Noah that he couldn’t make decisions for himself.

My mother had secretly helped protect him.

But there was one more reason she’d always been protective of him.

She pulled a small envelope from her purse.

“This was given to me when you were six.”

I stared at it.

My name was written across the front.

I opened it with trembling fingers.

Inside was a photograph of Noah and me from first grade.

On the back, his mother had written:

“Someday, they may understand why these two found each other.”

I looked at Mom.

“What does that mean?”

She began crying.

“It means your friendship was never something we needed to fix, hide, or explain. Noah has always been capable of choosing the people he loves.”

Then she squeezed my hands.

“But tonight, you need to promise me something.”

“What?”

“If you go with Noah, don’t go because you feel sorry for him.”

I almost laughed through my tears.

“Mom, I would never.”

“I know,” she whispered. “That’s why I’m finally telling you.”

At that moment, someone knocked softly on the bedroom door.

It was Noah.

“Are you ready?” he called.

I looked at Mom.

Then I looked at the pinkie promise I had kept for twelve years.

I opened the door.

Noah stood there holding my corsage.

But before we could leave, Mom stopped him.

“Noah, there’s something you deserve to know too.”

His smile disappeared.

And when Mom finally told him the secret she’d been protecting for twelve years, Noah’s eyes widened.

Then he reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a second envelope.

“I have one too,” he whispered.

I looked at him in shock.

“What’s inside?”

He handed it to me.

The first sentence made my entire body go cold.

Because it revealed that our prom promise hadn’t been the most important promise made that day…

And someone had been waiting twelve years for us to discover the truth.
