Part 2 — He Walked Into My Hospital Room in His Wedding Tuxedo… Then I Handed Him the Document That Destroyed His New Marriage
Brandon stood frozen at the foot of my hospital bed.
His bride, Vanessa, remained behind him, still wearing the white wedding gown she had probably spent months choosing.
But neither of them was looking at each other anymore.
They were looking at my daughter.
Our daughter.
Brandon slowly stepped closer.
“Claire…”
I adjusted the blanket around the sleeping baby.
“You wanted to know whose baby she is.”
His eyes filled with panic.
“Is she mine?”
I didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, I reached for the folder sitting beside my bed.
Vanessa suddenly moved forward.
“Brandon, we should leave.”
I looked at her.
“No. You two came here because you wanted answers.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Claire, whatever you’re trying to do—”
“I’m not trying to do anything.”
I opened the folder.
“I’m showing him what you already knew.”
Brandon turned toward her.
“What does she mean?”
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“She’s upset. She just had a baby.”
I pulled out the first document.
A paternity test.
Brandon stared at it.
His hands began trembling.
“Claire…”
I finally looked him directly in the eyes.
“She’s yours.”
The room went completely silent.
Brandon covered his mouth.
His knees nearly buckled.
“You knew?”
“I found out three months ago.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I laughed softly.
“Because you told me six months ago that you were leaving me for someone who could give you the future you wanted.”
His face collapsed.
“I didn’t know…”
“No,” I interrupted. “You didn’t want to know.”
Vanessa suddenly stepped toward the door.
I stopped her with four words.
“You should read page six.”
She froze.
Brandon picked up the folder.
He turned the page.
His expression changed.
“What is this?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
It was a copy of a financial agreement between Vanessa and Brandon.
But it wasn’t what shocked him.
It was the date.
The agreement had been signed two weeks before Brandon ever told me he wanted a divorce.
Brandon looked at Vanessa.
“You were planning this before I left Claire?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“That isn’t what it looks like.”
Then he turned another page.
There were emails.
Bank transfers.
Messages between Vanessa and someone named Daniel.
Brandon’s face became pale.
“Who’s Daniel?”
Vanessa said nothing.
I quietly answered for her.
“Her husband.”
Brandon stared at me.
“What?”
I handed him the final document.
“Vanessa was already married when she met you.”
His fingers went numb.
The woman standing beside him wasn’t the wealthy single woman he believed he had fallen in love with.
She had been hiding another marriage, significant debt, and a plan to use Brandon to escape it.
But there was one more thing.
I pointed toward the newborn.
“She wasn’t the only reason I asked you to come here.”
Brandon looked at me.
“What else?”
I opened the final envelope.
Inside was a letter from my attorney.
“Your divorce isn’t finished.”
His eyes widened.
“You mean…”
“The divorce judgment was never finalized.”
Vanessa suddenly screamed.
“That’s impossible!”
I looked at her calmly.
“Your wedding wasn’t legally valid.”
Brandon slowly turned toward his bride.
The woman he’d just married began crying.
And then my newborn daughter opened her eyes.
Brandon looked down at her for the first time.
His entire expression softened.
He whispered:
“She’s really mine.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
He reached toward her tiny hand.
Then stopped himself.
“Claire… can I hold my daughter?”
For the first time since he walked through that door, I saw the man I had once loved.
But I wasn’t ready to forgive him.
Not yet.
Because there was still one document in that folder that Brandon hadn’t seen.
And when he finally read it, he discovered the secret Vanessa had been hiding from both of us…
a secret that could determine whether she walked out of that hospital as his wife—
or walked straight into a courtroom.
