My Brother Refused to Take His Newborn Daughter Home… Then the Doctor Told Us What Was Written on Her Back

Part 2 — My Brother Refused to Take His Newborn Daughter Home… Then the Doctor Told Us What Was Written on Her Back

For several seconds, nobody in the delivery room moved.

Vanessa was crying.

Ethan was standing against the wall, staring at the newborn as though he had just seen a ghost.

And I was still holding the tiny baby against my chest.

“Ethan,” I whispered. “What did you see?”

He shook his head.

“I can’t explain it.”

Vanessa wiped her tears.

“Then explain it anyway!”

Ethan looked at the doctor.

“Please tell them.”

The pediatrician carefully examined the baby again.

Then she looked at us.

“What you’re seeing is a congenital skin marking.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“A birthmark?”

The doctor nodded.

“But the unusual part is its shape.”

She gently turned the baby.

I looked again.

The mark stretched across the baby’s upper back in a strange, reddish pattern.

It almost looked like a symbol.

But Ethan wasn’t staring at the mark anymore.

He was staring at the bracelet around the baby’s wrist.

His face suddenly went white.

“Where did that come from?”

The nurse looked confused.

“The hospital bracelet?”

“No.”

He pointed toward a tiny silver charm attached to it.

“That.”

The nurse checked the baby’s chart.

“It was placed there when she arrived.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Who gave you that charm?”

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa suddenly whispered:

“Ethan…”

He turned toward her.

“You know what that is?”

Vanessa’s face had completely changed.

She slowly shook her head.

“No.”

But Ethan didn’t believe her.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

Then he showed me an old photograph.

It was a picture of our mother from years ago.

Around her neck was the exact same silver symbol.

My heart stopped.

“What does that mean?”

Ethan swallowed.

“That belonged to Mom.”

I stared at the charm.

Our mother had died before we ever had the chance to ask about most of her past.

But there was something even stranger.

The baby wasn’t supposed to have that charm.

Nobody in our family had brought it.

And then the doctor returned with another piece of information.

“Claire, there is something else you should know.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She lowered her voice.

“The baby’s medical records don’t match the information originally submitted for the embryo.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“What are you saying?”

The doctor hesitated.

“We need to repeat the genetic testing.”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“Why?”

“Because there may have been an error involving the embryo identification.”

Silence filled the room.

I looked at Ethan.

Then Vanessa.

Then the baby in my arms.

“You mean this might not be Ethan’s daughter?”

The doctor didn’t answer directly.

“We don’t know yet.”

Ethan immediately grabbed his phone.

“I need to call the fertility clinic.”

But before he could dial, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Then froze.

It was the clinic director.

Ethan answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice came through the speaker.

I couldn’t hear every word.

But I heard enough to see Ethan’s expression collapse.

“What do you mean the embryo was switched?”

Vanessa gasped.

I felt my entire body go cold.

The doctor looked at us.

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

Then he looked at me.

“Claire…”

His voice barely worked.

“This baby may not be the child we were supposed to receive.”

Vanessa began sobbing.

But Ethan wasn’t finished.

He looked at the silver charm again.

Then whispered:

“And whoever placed that on her knew exactly who she was.”

I looked down at the newborn sleeping peacefully in my arms.

For the first time, I wasn’t wondering why Ethan had rejected his daughter.

I was wondering something far more terrifying.

Who had deliberately placed this baby in our lives—and why?

And when the fertility clinic sent us the original embryo records, we discovered a name that none of us had expected to see…

my mother’s.
