When Don Raúl Stopped Laughing, His Family Arrived With a Lawyer

PART 2 — When Don Raúl Stopped Laughing, His Family Arrived With a Lawyer

For several seconds, Don Raúl just stared at me.

Then he laughed again.

Not because he thought it was funny.

Because he was overwhelmed.

“Pregnant?” he finally whispered.

I nodded.

He sat down slowly in his kitchen chair.

“I thought my life was already finished,” he said. “And now you’re telling me I’m going to be a father?”

I couldn’t stop crying.

“I don’t know what happens next.”

He reached across the table and took my hand.

“We find out together.”

For the next few weeks, everything changed.

Don Raúl became ridiculously protective.

He insisted on carrying every grocery bag.

He bought a tiny pair of baby shoes before we even knew whether we were having a boy or girl.

And every evening, he placed his hand gently on my stomach and talked to the baby.

But the happiness didn’t last.

One afternoon, three black SUVs stopped outside the house.

His nephews stepped out.

And they weren’t alone.

A lawyer followed them.

The oldest nephew walked straight toward us.

“Uncle Raúl, we’re here to discuss the house.”

Don Raúl stood up.

“You’ve already discussed it enough.”

The nephew looked at me.

“And we’re also here to question this marriage.”

My heart dropped.

“What does that mean?”

The lawyer opened a folder.

“We have reason to believe this marriage was entered into solely to obtain property.”

I stared at him.

“That isn’t true.”

Then the nephew smiled.

“You married an eighty-year-old man and became pregnant almost immediately. Do you honestly expect us to believe this was all coincidence?”

Don Raúl’s face hardened.

“Leave my wife alone.”

But the lawyer placed a document on the table.

“We are challenging the validity of the marriage and the ownership arrangement.”

I looked at Don Raúl.

For the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.

Not fear of losing the house.

Fear of losing me.

Then he quietly said something that made everyone stop.

“Open the second drawer.”

His nephew frowned.

“What?”

“The second drawer in my desk.”

The lawyer looked confused.

Don Raúl pointed toward it.

“There’s a document inside that you should have seen years ago.”

His nephew opened the drawer.

He pulled out a sealed envelope.

Then he read the name written across the front.

His face suddenly went pale.

“What is this?”

Don Raúl smiled.

“My original will.”

The nephew opened it.

His expression changed completely.

Because Don Raúl had already anticipated exactly what his family would try to do.

And inside that envelope was a decision that meant none of them would get the house—

unless they could answer one question.

A question Don Raúl had been waiting years to ask.
