My Daughter Never Came Home, But Every Year She Sent the Same Strange Gift

PART 2 — My Daughter Never Came Home, But Every Year She Sent the Same Strange Gift

For twelve years, I had asked myself the same question:

Why wouldn’t my daughter come home?

She had married Daniel, a Korean man she met in college, when she was only twenty-one.

At first, I tried to accept it.

I told myself she was young.

She was in love.

She wanted to build a life of her own.

But after the wedding, something changed.

She moved overseas with Daniel and stopped visiting.

Not once.

Not even for Christmas.

Still, every year on my birthday, a package arrived at my front door.

The first year, it contained a beautiful Korean scarf.

The second year, an expensive tea set.

The third year, a handwritten card.

Every package contained the same sentence:

“Mom, please keep waiting for me.”

I couldn’t understand it.

If she was happy, why didn’t she come home?

If she was unhappy, why didn’t she ask for help?

Then came the twelfth year.

The package arrived on my birthday.

But this time, there was no gift inside.

Only an old photograph.

It showed my daughter standing beside Daniel.

But they weren’t smiling.

Behind them was a little girl.

I stared at the photograph until my hands began shaking.

On the back, my daughter had written:

“Mom, her name is Sophie. She is your granddaughter.”

I dropped the photograph.

My daughter had never told me she had a child.

Then I noticed another piece of paper inside the envelope.

Three words were written across it:

“He won’t let me.”

My heart stopped.

That evening, someone knocked on my door.

When I opened it, a Korean woman I had never seen before was standing there.

She looked nervous.

“Are you Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes.”

She handed me another envelope.

“Your daughter asked me to bring this to you if anything happened to her.”

My hands went cold.

“What happened?”

The woman looked behind her before whispering:

“Your daughter disappeared three weeks ago.”

I couldn’t breathe.

She quickly added:

“She told me that if she ever disappeared, I was supposed to bring you here.”

She handed me a plane ticket.

The destination was Seoul.

Then she said the words that changed everything:

“Your daughter didn’t stay away from you because she didn’t love you.”

“She stayed away because she was trying to protect you.”

I looked down at the ticket.

And for the first time in twelve years, I finally understood why my daughter had never stopped sending those birthday packages.

She had been leaving me a trail.

And now it was time for me to follow it.
