PART 2 — I Cancelled My Wedding After Hearing What My Future Wife Said to My Daughter Behind Closed Doors
I stared at the laptop screen.
My hands were shaking.
For two years, I had believed Vanessa loved me.
I had defended her when Lauren questioned the relationship.
I had told my daughter she needed to give Vanessa a chance.
And all along, Vanessa had apparently been planning something much darker.
Another knock hit the door.
“Michael?”
Her voice sounded sweet again.
I closed the laptop.
“Just a minute.”
I quickly copied the files onto my phone.
Then I opened the video again.
This time, I noticed something I hadn’t seen before.
A document sat on the kitchen counter.
Vanessa had placed it beside Lauren.
I paused the video.
Zoomed in.
My stomach dropped.
It was a power-of-attorney document.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
But I had never signed it.
I opened another file from the USB.
It was a scanned bank statement.
A large transfer had been scheduled for the morning after our wedding.
The destination account belonged to a company I didn’t recognize.
Then I saw the amount.
$780,000.
Almost everything I had saved after my first wife’s death.
My future wife wasn’t simply trying to marry me.
She was trying to gain control of my money.
But there was something else.
A message from Lauren.
Dad, please believe me. I found this three weeks ago. I was going to tell you, but Vanessa threatened Oliver.
My heart stopped.
I immediately called Lauren.
No answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
Then I called my grandson’s mother.
The phone rang once.
Then disconnected.
I rushed out of the room.
Vanessa was waiting in the corridor.
She smiled.
“What took you so long?”
I looked at her.
“Where is Lauren?”
Her smile vanished.
“Why?”
“Where is my daughter?”
“She said she wasn’t feeling well.”
“Where is she?”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Michael, you’re getting emotional before the ceremony.”
I stepped closer.
“Did you hurt my daughter?”
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Then Oliver came running toward us.
“Grandpa!”
He grabbed my hand.
Vanessa immediately crouched.
“Oliver, come here.”
He backed away from her.
“No.”
Her expression hardened.
That was when I knew.
A three-year-old child had been telling me the truth.
I turned toward the ballroom.
The music had already started.
Guests were waiting.
The wedding coordinator approached nervously.
“Mr. Carter, they’re ready for you.”
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at the ballroom doors.
“I’m not getting married today.”
The coordinator froze.
Vanessa stared at me.
“What did you say?”
“I said I’m not marrying you.”
Her face went pale.
“You’re embarrassing me.”
“No.”
I pulled the USB from my pocket.
“You did that yourself.”
She stared at it.
For the first time, genuine fear crossed her face.
“You went through that?”
“I saw everything.”
She stepped backward.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand enough.”
Then she suddenly grabbed my arm.
“Michael, please.”
I pulled away.
“Where is my daughter?”
She didn’t answer.
“Where is Lauren?”
Still nothing.
Then Oliver began crying.
He pointed toward Vanessa.
“She made Mommy fall.”
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“That child doesn’t know what he’s saying.”
I looked at her.
“He knows enough.”
I called the police.
Within minutes, the hotel became chaos.
Guests were escorted away from the ballroom.
The ceremony was cancelled.
And officers began questioning Vanessa.
Then one of them came toward me.
“Mr. Carter?”
“Yes?”
“We found something you need to see.”
He handed me a photograph.
It showed Lauren entering an apartment building three days earlier.
Behind her was Vanessa.
My stomach tightened.
“Where is this?”
The officer gave me the address.
It was only fifteen minutes from the hotel.
“We believe your daughter may have been held there.”
I couldn’t move.
Then my phone rang.
It was an unknown number.
I answered.
A weak voice whispered:
“Dad?”
My knees nearly collapsed.
“Lauren?”
“Dad, please listen.”
“Where are you?”
“I don’t know.”
I could hear her crying.
“She took my phone.”
“Who?”
“Vanessa.”
My blood ran cold.
Then Lauren whispered something that changed everything.
“Dad… she’s not after your money anymore.”
“What does that mean?”
“She found Mom’s old documents.”
I froze.
“My first wife’s documents?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Lauren began sobbing.
“Because Vanessa discovered something about Mom’s death.”
Silence.
Then my daughter said:
“Dad… Mom didn’t die the way you were told.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“What are you saying?”
Lauren whispered:
“Vanessa knows what really happened six years ago.”
And then the call suddenly ended.
I stood there in the hotel corridor, surrounded by wedding decorations that would never be used.
My future wife was being questioned by police.
My daughter was missing.
And the woman I had trusted for two years had just opened a secret surrounding my late wife’s death.
But the most terrifying part was what the officer told me next.
They had searched Vanessa’s car.
And inside the trunk, they found an old photograph.
A photograph of my late wife…
taken the night before she died.
