My Husband Asked Me to Take Home a Newborn Girl… Then I Learned Why Her Mother Had Chosen Him

PART 2 — My Husband Asked Me to Take Home a Newborn Girl… Then I Learned Why Her Mother Had Chosen Him

I sat down.

Adrian remained standing in front of me, his hands trembling slightly.

“Claire,” he said quietly, “that baby doesn’t have anyone.”

I looked toward the nursery.

“What do you mean?”

“Her mother is in surgery.”

My heart tightened.

“Where’s the father?”

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Then he whispered,

“There isn’t one.”

I stared at him.

“What happened?”

He sat beside me.

“She came into the hospital alone this morning. No family. No partner. Nothing.”

I looked through the glass again.

The tiny baby was sleeping peacefully.

“She asked for me.”

I turned sharply.

“Why would she ask for you?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Because she knew me.”

The words landed strangely.

I waited.

Then he finally said a name.

“Vanessa.”

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa Hale.

Adrian’s first serious girlfriend.

The woman he had dated before me.

I had met her only once, years ago.

“What does she have to do with this?”

Adrian looked toward the nursery.

“She gave birth to that baby.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

“You never told me she was here.”

“I didn’t know.”

“When did you find out?”

“This morning.”

I stood.

“Why would she ask for you after all these years?”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

“She asked the nurses to call me if something happened to her.”

“Something happened?”

He nodded.

“She had a major complication after delivery.”

I covered my mouth.

“Is she going to be okay?”

“They don’t know yet.”

Silence filled the hallway.

Then Adrian said the words that changed everything.

“She left instructions.”

“What kind of instructions?”

“She named the baby.”

I looked at him.

“What’s her name?”

Adrian’s voice cracked.

“Emma.”

The same name I had chosen for our daughter twenty years ago.

My knees suddenly felt weak.

I sat down again.

“How did she know?”

“She didn’t.”

Adrian reached into his coat pocket.

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“She wrote this before giving birth.”

I stared at it.

“Did you read it?”

He shook his head.

“She asked the nurse to give it to me only if she didn’t survive.”

My hands began trembling.

“Adrian…”

“I don’t know what it says.”

I took the paper.

My name was written on the outside.

Claire.

Not Adrian.

Mine.

I looked at my husband.

“Why is this addressed to me?”

“I don’t know.”

I opened it.

The first line made my breath catch.

Claire, if you are reading this, then I didn’t get the chance to explain what happened eleven years ago.

I looked at Adrian.

“Eleven years ago?”

He went completely still.

That was the year our youngest son was born.

The year we were told I could never safely become pregnant again.

I continued reading.

Then my hands started shaking.

Vanessa had written that she had discovered something years earlier.

Something involving Adrian.

Something she had promised never to reveal unless she was dying.

I looked up.

“Adrian, what happened eleven years ago?”

He stared at me.

“I don’t know.”

I believed him.

At least for the moment.

Then the nurse suddenly rushed out of the maternity room.

“Mr. Carter?”

Adrian stood immediately.

“Yes?”

“Her condition has changed.”

His face went pale.

“Is she awake?”

The nurse nodded.

“She asked for both of you.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

The nurse looked directly at me.

“She specifically asked for Claire.”

I followed Adrian into the room.

Vanessa was pale and exhausted, but conscious.

Her eyes moved toward me.

She started crying.

“I am so sorry.”

I stood beside her bed.

“Why did you call my husband?”

She looked at Adrian.

Then back at me.

“Because he isn’t the only person who needs to know.”

My heart started pounding.

“What are you talking about?”

She reached weakly toward the newborn bassinet.

“Emma…”

Her voice cracked.

“She is yours.”

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not biologically.”

I couldn’t understand.

“Then what do you mean?”

She looked at Adrian.

Then whispered:

“Eleven years ago, when you were pregnant with your youngest son…”

Adrian stepped closer.

“What happened?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was the person who found the medical report.”

My blood ran cold.

“What medical report?”

She looked directly at me.

“The one that said your pregnancy should have been impossible.”

Adrian froze.

Vanessa continued.

“And Claire…”

She pointed toward baby Emma.

“She was supposed to have been your daughter.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Then Vanessa revealed the secret that had been buried for eleven years.

A secret that would force me to question everything I believed about my youngest son’s birth…

and why Emma had somehow ended up in that hospital room waiting for us.
