The Secret My Wife Left Inside Her Will

PART 2 — The Secret My Wife Left Inside Her Will

The lawyer unfolded several pages and looked at me for a long moment.

Then he began reading.

“To my husband…”

I stopped breathing.

She had never written those words before.

Not once.

The lawyer continued.

“If you are hearing this, then the surgery did not go the way we prayed it would.”

I closed my eyes.

Her voice seemed to fill the room anyway.

“I know you will blame yourself for loving me.”

My hands began shaking.

“But please don’t.”

The lawyer paused.

I looked up.

“What does the rest say?”

He swallowed.

“She specifically instructed me to read this part exactly.”

Then he continued.

“I refused to marry you for years because I was afraid you would spend the rest of your life paying for my illness.”

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“But I finally realized something.”

She had written:

“You were already paying.”

The lawyer stopped again.

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

He turned the page.

“Every appointment you drove me to. Every night you stayed awake. Every meal you brought me when I couldn’t eat. Every time you held my hand while I was terrified…”

My throat tightened.

“She knew,” the lawyer said quietly.

“She knew you had already given her everything.”

Then he read the sentence that changed everything.

“So I married you because I wanted you to receive something from me too.”

I looked confused.

The lawyer reached into a folder.

Inside was a bank statement.

My wife’s name was on it.

There was enough money in the account to pay every medical bill I had accumulated.

But that wasn’t all.

There was a second account.

Then a third.

She had been secretly saving money for years.

Not from me.

For me.

The lawyer explained that after my wife became sick, she had discovered an old life insurance policy belonging to her father.

She had been the beneficiary.

She had never told me because she didn’t want me to stay with her because of money.

Then she had changed the policy.

The beneficiary was now me.

I couldn’t speak.

“She didn’t marry you to take anything,” the lawyer said.

“She married you because she wanted to make sure you weren’t destroyed by losing her.”

Then he handed me another envelope.

My name was written across it in her handwriting.

I opened it with trembling fingers.

Inside was a single photograph.

It was from our first summer together.

On the back she had written:

“You once told me I made your life better. I hope this makes it possible for you to keep living it.”

I broke down.

But the lawyer wasn’t finished.

“There is one final condition.”

I looked up.

“What condition?”

He slid another document across the table.

“She established a trust.”

“For whom?”

“For children receiving treatment at the same hospital where she spent her final months.”

I stared at the papers.

“She gave away almost everything.”

The lawyer nodded.

“She wanted other families to have something she never had enough of.”

“Hope?”

He smiled sadly.

“No.”

“Time.”

I looked down at my wedding ring.

For years, I had thought that ring represented the life we had lost.

That day, I finally understood what she had intended.

It wasn’t a symbol of death.

It was her final promise that my life wasn’t supposed to end with hers.

And then the lawyer handed me one last envelope.

“This one,” he said, “was not included in the will.”

I turned it over.

There was no writing on the front.

Only one sentence inside:

“Open this when you are ready to fall in love again.”

I stared at it for a long time.

Because I knew exactly what she was asking me to do.

And I wasn’t sure I could.
