PART 2 — The Bet My Husband Made About My Body
The moment I sat down at their table, nobody spoke.
Derek stared at me.
Wade suddenly became very interested in his drink.
Travis looked at Caleb.
Then Caleb whispered, “Avery… what are you doing here?”
I smiled.
“I came to find out what my husband promised you three months ago.”
Caleb’s face went completely pale.
Derek muttered, “You weren’t supposed to know.”
That sentence told me everything.
I looked at Caleb.
“You made a bet?”
He rubbed his forehead.
“It wasn’t exactly a bet.”
“Then what was it?”
Nobody answered.
So I stood up.
“I’ll leave when somebody tells me the truth.”
Finally, Wade sighed.
“Caleb told us you wouldn’t get back into shape after the twins.”
My stomach tightened.
“How much?”
Caleb closed his eyes.
“Five thousand dollars.”
For a second, I couldn’t speak.
Five thousand dollars.
My husband had turned my postpartum body into a competition.
But there was more.
Derek leaned forward.
“He said you’d never wear your old clothes again.”
Travis added quietly, “And he said if you did, he’d buy everyone a steak dinner.”
I looked at Caleb.
“Is that why you gave me that portrait?”
He didn’t answer.
“Was the AI woman part of the bet?”
His silence was louder than any confession.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because of the money.
Because while I was waking up every two hours to feed our children, my husband had been sitting in a bar with his friends, discussing whether my body was worthy of respect.
I stood.
“Congratulations, Caleb.”
He looked confused.
“On what?”
“You lost.”
He swallowed.
“I haven’t lost anything.”
I smiled sadly.
“No. You lost your wife.”
I walked away.
But when I reached the parking lot, Caleb followed me.
“Avery, wait.”
I turned around.
He looked different now.
Not angry.
Terrified.
“I was stupid,” he said.
“Yes.”
“I thought if you had motivation—”
“You thought humiliation was motivation.”
He lowered his head.
Then he said something I never expected.
“The five thousand dollars wasn’t the real bet.”
I stared at him.
“What do you mean?”
He pulled out his phone.
“There was another condition.”
My heart began pounding.
“What condition?”
He hesitated.
“If I lost the bet, I had to tell you something.”
“What?”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“I’ve been offered a promotion in another state.”
I froze.
“And I was planning to take it.”
My voice went cold.
“Without discussing it with me?”
He nodded.
“That’s not all.”
He looked down at his phone.
“The company wanted me there within thirty days.”
I felt sick.
“You were going to move us?”
“Yes.”
“Me and the twins?”
“Yes.”
“Without asking me?”
He couldn’t look at me.
Then I remembered the black binder.
The schedule.
The childcare responsibilities.
The nights I’d forced him to experience.
Suddenly, I understood why he had been trying so desperately to change me.
He didn’t just want the old Avery back.
He wanted a wife who would quietly follow him wherever he went.
A wife who would fit into the life he had already planned.
I took a breath.
“Caleb, I’m not moving anywhere.”
He looked stunned.
“I’m not your project.”
I walked back toward my car.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Brooke.
Just four words:
“Check Caleb’s second phone.”
I stopped.
Because Caleb had never told me he had a second phone.
And suddenly, the promotion wasn’t the only secret left.
