My Husband Laughed at My Five-Minute Ultimatum—Then His Attorney Told Him What I Had Already Done

PART 2 — My Husband Laughed at My Five-Minute Ultimatum—Then His Attorney Told Him What I Had Already Done

At exactly five minutes, my phone rang.

Adrian.

I answered.

“Claire, what exactly are you trying to accomplish?”

I looked at the clock.

“Nothing anymore.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means your five minutes are over.”

He laughed again.

“You’re seriously threatening me over your hair?”

“No, Adrian.”

I paused.

“I’m protecting myself from what comes next.”

His voice changed.

“What did you do?”

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I drove to Westbridge Legal Group.

My attorney, Sophie, was waiting in the lobby.

She looked at my hair.

Then at my face.

“Are you okay?”

“I will be.”

She handed me a folder.

“The injunction is active.”

I opened it.

Adrian was temporarily barred from transferring certain marital assets, moving company funds connected to our joint interests, or disposing of property covered by the emergency order.

But that wasn’t all.

Sophie lowered her voice.

“There’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Vanessa isn’t just Adrian’s assistant.”

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?”

“She has been receiving payments from a company that has no obvious business relationship with Blackwood Logistics.”

“Adrian’s company?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Sophie slid a statement across the desk.

My stomach tightened.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Over several months.

I looked up.

“Where did the money come from?”

“We’re still tracing it.”

Then my phone buzzed.

Adrian had sent a message.

We need to talk privately.

I didn’t respond.

Another message arrived.

Please don’t do anything you’ll regret.

I almost smiled.

That was exactly what people said when they realized someone else had stopped playing by their rules.

Twenty minutes later, Adrian arrived.

Vanessa was with him.

She walked into the office wearing sunglasses and an expression that suggested she still believed this could somehow be fixed.

Adrian sat across from me.

“Claire, this has gone too far.”

I looked at him.

“You’re right.”

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

Then I continued.

“It went too far when she put her hands on me.”

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“I didn’t mean to hurt her.”

“You shaved my head.”

“I was angry.”

“You were jealous.”

She rolled her eyes.

“I was protecting my relationship.”

I looked at Adrian.

“Your relationship?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

I opened the folder.

“Do you know what this is?”

Adrian looked down.

His face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

“From our financial records.”

Sophie placed another document beside it.

Then another.

Adrian’s confidence disappeared completely.

“What is this?”

I asked.

He stared at the pages.

“The payments to Vanessa.”

He swallowed.

“They were legitimate.”

“Then explain why they went through a shell company.”

He said nothing.

Vanessa looked at him.

“Adrian?”

He stood abruptly.

“This meeting is over.”

Sophie didn’t move.

“No, it isn’t.”

Adrian glared at her.

“You can’t hold me here.”

“We aren’t holding you.”

She pointed toward the door.

“You’re free to leave.”

He didn’t.

Because he knew exactly what would happen if he walked out.

Then Sophie handed him another document.

“This is a preservation order.”

His eyes widened.

“We’ve already notified the relevant financial institutions.”

I watched him read.

For the first time since I’d known him, Adrian looked genuinely afraid.

Then Vanessa started crying.

“You told me everything was handled.”

Adrian turned toward her.

“Not now.”

“You said Claire didn’t know anything.”

“She didn’t.”

“She does now!”

The room went silent.

I looked between them.

“Thank you, Vanessa.”

She froze.

“For what?”

“For finally telling the truth.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“You set me up.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

I touched the folder.

“You did that yourself.”

Then I stood.

“You had five minutes to protect our marriage.”

He stared at me.

“And you spent those five minutes laughing.”

I walked toward the door.

Behind me, Adrian suddenly called my name.

“Claire.”

I stopped.

“I’m sorry.”

I turned around.

“For the affair?”

He lowered his eyes.

“For everything.”

I nodded slowly.

“I believe you.”

His face lifted with hope.

Then I added:

“But forgiveness doesn’t mean access.”

His expression fell.

I left the office.

Three days later, the financial investigation revealed something none of us had expected.

The payments to Vanessa weren’t simply gifts.

They were connected to missing company funds.

And some of that money had been transferred into an account bearing a name I recognized immediately.

My name.

Someone had been using my identity to move money.

And when the investigator showed me the signature on the final transfer…

I knew exactly who had forged it.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Adrian.

It was someone I had trusted for more than fifteen years.

And suddenly, my husband’s affair wasn’t the biggest betrayal in my marriage.

It was only the doorway into something much darker.
