PART 2 — My Brother Refused His Newborn Daughter Because of What He Saw on Her Back—Then the Doctor Revealed the Truth
I stared at the tiny mark on my niece’s back.
At first, I didn’t understand why Ryan was so frightened.
Then the doctor stepped closer.
“Everyone needs to calm down.”
Ryan shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
“I understand exactly what you’re afraid of,” the doctor said.
He gently examined the baby.
Then he looked at Ryan.
“This doesn’t mean what you think it means.”
Ryan’s eyes filled with tears.
“But my father had it.”
The room went silent.
Melissa turned toward him.
“What?”
Ryan swallowed hard.
“My dad had the same birthmark.”
I looked at him in disbelief.
“You never told me that.”
“I couldn’t.”
“Why?”
He stared at the baby.
“Because my father died because of a genetic condition. I thought she had it too.”
The doctor immediately shook his head.
“A birthmark alone doesn’t establish that.”
Ryan looked confused.
“But what if—”
“We’ll run the appropriate tests,” the doctor said. “Until then, you don’t get to decide this baby’s future based on fear.”
Melissa stepped toward him.
“You were going to abandon your daughter because you were scared?”
Ryan broke down.
“I thought I was protecting her.”
“No,” Melissa whispered.
“You were protecting yourself.”
I held the baby tighter.
She was completely peaceful.
She had no idea that adults were standing around her deciding whether she deserved to go home.
Then something happened that changed everything.
The doctor returned with the preliminary results.
“There is no evidence that this baby has the condition you’re worried about.”
Ryan stared at him.
“Are you sure?”
“The mark is benign.”
Melissa covered her face and started crying.
Ryan sat down.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then he looked at me.
“I was wrong.”
I wanted to forgive him.
He was my twin.
My best friend.
But I couldn’t forget the moment he had put his daughter back into my arms.
“You weren’t just wrong, Ryan.”
He looked down.
“You looked at your daughter and saw a problem before you saw her.”
His face crumpled.
“I know.”
I handed the baby to Melissa.
She held her against her chest and whispered:
“You’re coming home with us.”
Ryan stood slowly.
He reached toward his daughter.
This time, he didn’t hesitate.
Her tiny fingers wrapped around his thumb.
He started crying.
“I don’t deserve her.”
Melissa looked at him.
“Then spend the rest of your life proving that you do.”
I thought that was the end of the nightmare.
It wasn’t.
The next morning, the hospital called me.
They said there was something else they needed to discuss about the baby’s medical records.
I went back immediately.
A specialist was waiting.
He placed a file on the desk.
“Your niece’s genetic screening came back.”
I looked at him.
“Is something wrong?”
He hesitated.
“No.”
Then he turned the file toward me.
“The baby is healthy.”
I exhaled.
“Then why did you call me?”
He pointed to one section of the report.
“There is something unusual in the genetic history.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“The biological father listed on the paperwork doesn’t match the expected genetic profile.”
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?”
He lowered his voice.
“We need to repeat the test.”
I felt my entire body go cold.
Because Ryan was supposed to be the baby’s biological father.
But the preliminary test suggested something impossible.
The baby wasn’t genetically related to him.
I immediately called Melissa.
She answered in tears.
“What’s wrong?”
I looked down at the report.
“I think you and Ryan need to come back to the hospital.”
“Why?”
I swallowed.
“The doctors found something in the baby’s DNA.”
There was silence.
Then I heard Ryan in the background.
“What did they find?”
I closed my eyes.
“They don’t think you’re the biological father.”
The line went completely silent.
And suddenly, the question wasn’t whether Ryan would take his daughter home.
It was whose daughter she really was.
