PART 2 — My Ex-Wife Smiled When She Saw Me Walk Toward Our Sons—Then She Told Me Why She Had Kept Them Away for 15 Years
I stopped a few feet from Claire.
Fifteen years disappeared in one second.
She looked older than I remembered.
Not weaker.
Stronger.
There was a calmness in her face that made me uncomfortable.
“Claire.”
She nodded.
“Adrian.”
I looked past her toward the stage.
Leo and Ethan were still holding their medals.
“They’re my sons.”
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said quietly,
“Yes.”
My throat tightened.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
She stared at me.
“I did.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I sent you three letters.”
My stomach dropped.
“I never received them.”
“I know.”
“Claire…”
She reached into her purse and pulled out an old envelope.
My name was written across the front.
My handwriting wasn’t there.
Hers was.
“I sent this one to the address you gave me.”
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t I get it?”
She looked toward Eleanor.
I followed her gaze.
Eleanor was standing several rows behind us.
Her face had gone completely white.
Claire said,
“Because someone made sure you didn’t.”
I turned around.
Eleanor immediately looked away.
“Adrian,” Claire continued, “I didn’t keep your sons from you.”
“Then who did?”
Before she could answer, Leo approached.
He was holding his gold medal in one hand.
He looked at me for several seconds.
Then he said,
“Are you our father?”
I couldn’t speak.
Ethan joined him.
He didn’t look angry.
That somehow hurt more.
He simply asked,
“Why didn’t you come?”
I finally managed to answer.
“I didn’t know about you.”
Leo looked at his brother.
Then back at me.
“We knew about you.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
Ethan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a photograph.
It was old.
Claire was standing outside a courthouse.
She was pregnant.
Beside her was a younger man I recognized immediately.
My former attorney.
But the photograph wasn’t what shocked me.
Written on the back were six words:
He chose not to come back.
I looked at Claire.
“Who gave them this?”
“My father.”
I stared at her.
“He told them everything.”
“Everything?”
“That you left when I was pregnant.”
“That I never came back.”
“That I never asked about them.”
I shook my head.
“I didn’t know.”
Claire’s expression softened slightly.
“I believe you.”
Then she added:
“But believing you doesn’t erase fifteen years.”
Those words hit harder than any accusation.
Behind us, Eleanor suddenly approached.
“This is ridiculous.”
I turned.
“Eleanor.”
“You don’t know what she’s trying to do.”
Claire remained silent.
Eleanor pointed toward Leo and Ethan.
“She knew exactly what she was doing. She waited until today because she wanted money.”
Leo frowned.
Ethan looked confused.
I looked at Eleanor.
“Stop.”
“She planned this.”
“I said stop.”
Her face hardened.
Then she made the mistake that changed everything.
“You should have listened when I told you those boys weren’t yours.”
The entire hallway went silent.
I stared at her.
“What did you just say?”
Eleanor realized what she had revealed.
Claire’s eyes widened.
Leo looked between us.
“You knew about us?”
Eleanor didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“How long?”
“Adrian…”
“How long did you know?”
She finally whispered,
“Almost fourteen years.”
My chest tightened.
“You knew I had sons?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“I was protecting our marriage.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You were protecting yourself.”
Then Claire walked over and placed the old envelope in my hand.
“There’s one more thing.”
“What?”
She pointed toward the letter.
“Open it.”
I unfolded the paper.
The first line made my hands start shaking.
Adrian, if you’re reading this, something has happened that you need to know about our boys.
I read the next sentence.
Then stopped.
Because Claire had written something that changed everything I thought I knew about my divorce.
She had discovered that the reason I left her fifteen years ago…
wasn’t the reason I believed.
And the person who had convinced me to walk away from my pregnant wife…
was standing right in front of me.
