PART 2 — THE SECRET DANIELLE LEFT BEHIND
I stared at the wooden box in the stranger’s hands.
“Who are you?”
He introduced himself as Daniel Mercer, Danielle’s attorney.
Then he looked at me with an expression I will never forget.
“She knew you would ask that.”
I slowly opened the door wider.
“Come in.”
Daniel stepped inside and placed the wooden box on my dining table.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he pushed the box toward me.
“She gave me very specific instructions.”
“What kind of instructions?”
He looked down.
“She told me not to give you this until eleven days after her funeral.”
I frowned.
“Why eleven days?”
Daniel shook his head.
“I asked her the same question.”
“And?”
“She just smiled and said, ‘Isaiah will understand when he sees it.’”
My hands began trembling again.
I opened the box.
Inside was a small key.
A folded photograph.
And a handwritten letter with my name on the front.
I picked up the photograph first.
It showed Danielle standing outside a small brick building I had never seen before.
On the back, she had written four words:
**You promised to stay.**
I closed my eyes.
I remembered that promise.
It was the night we learned she was dying.
She had looked at me through tears and said, “Isaiah, you don’t have to spend your life taking care of someone who won’t be here.”
And I had answered, “I’m not staying because I have to.”
“I’m staying because I love you.”
I unfolded the letter.
My heart nearly stopped when I saw the first sentence.
**My dearest Isaiah, if you’re reading this, then I’m gone.**
I had to put the letter down.
Daniel quietly stepped outside, giving me privacy.
I finally continued reading.
Danielle explained that she had known something was wrong with her family for years.
Not medically.
Personally.
She had discovered that her father had secretly maintained a second bank account.
An account that contained money Danielle had never known existed.
But that wasn’t the biggest secret.
She had also discovered a life insurance policy.
A very large one.
And just weeks before our wedding, someone had tried to change the beneficiary.
I stared at the page.
My name had originally been listed.
Then someone had attempted to remove me.
Danielle had stopped it.
But she had become suspicious.
She began investigating.
That’s when she found something that terrified her.
The person trying to take control of her money…
was someone she trusted.
Someone who had attended our wedding.
Someone who had hugged me at her funeral.
I felt sick.
I turned the page.
Danielle had written another sentence:
**Isaiah, I need you to find the building in this photograph.**
My eyes moved toward the picture.
I looked at the key inside the wooden box.
It suddenly made sense.
The key belonged to that building.
But there was one final line at the bottom of the letter.
**Don’t go there alone.**
I immediately called Daniel back inside.
“Did Danielle tell you what this key opens?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
My heart began racing.
“What is it?”
Daniel looked toward the photograph.
“A storage unit.”
“What’s inside?”
His face became serious.
“Danielle never told me.”
“Then why did she give you the key?”
Daniel paused.
“Because she told me that if anything happened to her, you would eventually need to see what was inside.”
I grabbed my coat.
Daniel stopped me.
“Isaiah…”
I turned around.
“She also gave me one more instruction.”
“What?”
He looked directly into my eyes.
“She said that if you ever opened that storage unit, you needed to remember one thing.”
“What thing?”
Daniel’s voice became quiet.
“Don’t trust the person who offers to help you.”
I froze.
Because there was only one person who had been calling me every day since Danielle’s funeral.
Her older brother.
And just that morning, he had offered to drive me anywhere I needed to go.
I looked back at the wooden box.
For the first time since Danielle died, I felt something other than grief.
I felt fear.
Because Danielle hadn’t simply left me a keepsake.
She had left me a warning.
And whatever was waiting inside that storage unit…
was important enough that she had spent the final weeks of her life making sure I would find it.
