PART 2 — THE DOCUMENTS THAT EXPOSED MY HUSBAND

PART 2 — THE DOCUMENTS THAT EXPOSED MY HUSBAND

Nolan stared at everyone in the room.

Then his eyes landed on the envelope in the process server’s hand.

“What is going on?”

Iris stirred in my arms.

I looked down at my daughter before answering.

“You tell me.”

Nolan glanced at my mother.

Then at Talia.

Finally, he looked at the detectives.

“Why are the police here?”

One of the detectives stood.

“Mr. Hale, we need to ask you some questions regarding the transfer of your mother-in-law’s property.”

Nolan’s face changed.

“What transfer?”

My mother slowly pushed the documents across the coffee table.

“These.”

Nolan looked at the papers.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he laughed.

“This is ridiculous.”

I felt something inside me break.

“You told me there was no woman in that hotel room.”

He looked at me.

“What?”

“I heard her.”

His expression hardened.

“You were in labor. You were confused.”

“No,” I said quietly.

“I was awake.”

The detective opened a folder.

“We have already confirmed that Mr. Hale was not in Riverton during the night your daughter was born.”

Nolan’s jaw tightened.

“Where was I, then?”

The detective looked at him.

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

I watched Nolan carefully.

He had always been good at controlling his emotions.

But this time, his hands were shaking.

Then my mother’s attorney spoke.

“We also obtained records showing that the power of attorney was used to transfer your mother’s property.”

Nolan immediately interrupted.

“She gave me permission.”

My mother slammed her hand against the table.

“I never gave you permission!”

Nolan stared at her.

“You were recovering from surgery. You don’t remember everything.”

My mother’s voice became stronger.

“I remember signing absolutely nothing.”

The attorney opened another folder.

“There’s a bigger problem.”

He placed a document on the table.

“This authorization was supposedly witnessed by Mara.”

I looked at the signature.

It looked exactly like mine.

But I knew I hadn’t signed it.

The detective leaned forward.

“Mrs. Hale, do you recognize the handwriting?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Have you ever seen this document before?”

“Never.”

Then Talia suddenly spoke.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She pulled out her phone.

“I may know how they copied her signature.”

She showed us an old photograph.

It was from our wedding anniversary.

I was signing a restaurant contract at the time.

My signature was clearly visible.

Talia looked at me.

“You posted this photo online three years ago.”

My stomach dropped.

Someone could have taken my signature from that photograph.

But the detective shook his head.

“That’s possible, but there’s something else.”

He placed a bank record beside the documents.

“The person who submitted these documents had access to Mrs. Hale’s financial information.”

I looked at Nolan.

He immediately said, “I had access because I’m her husband.”

The detective didn’t respond.

Instead, he slid another paper across the table.

It was a hotel invoice.

I looked at the date.

The same night I went into labor.

The hotel wasn’t in Riverton.

It was in Bellwether.

And the room had been booked under Nolan’s name.

My heart sank.

“Who was staying with you?”

Nolan remained silent.

The detective answered for him.

“Selene Ward.”

The woman from the bank account.

The woman whose laugh I had heard over the phone.

Nolan finally looked at me.

“Mara, I can explain.”

I tightened my arms around Iris.

“No.”

He took a step toward me.

“Please.”

I shook my head.

“You had three days to come home and tell me the truth.”

His face crumbled.

“I didn’t know how.”

“You knew exactly how.”

Then my mother’s attorney opened the final file.

“There is one more issue.”

Everyone became silent.

He removed a copy of the original property deed.

“This house wasn’t just transferred using forged signatures.”

He looked at my mother.

“It was transferred for a specific reason.”

I frowned.

“What reason?”

The attorney looked at Nolan.

“Your husband used your mother’s house as collateral for a private loan.”

My blood ran cold.

“How much?”

“Two hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”

“I know about the loan.”

“No,” the attorney said.

“You don’t know where the money went.”

He placed several transaction records in front of me.

The money hadn’t simply disappeared.

A large portion had been transferred to Selene.

But the final transfer showed something even more disturbing.

The remaining money had been sent to an account belonging to…

Nolan’s older brother.

I looked at Nolan.

“Why would your brother need my mother’s house?”

Nolan closed his eyes.

And for the first time since he walked through that door, he looked genuinely terrified.

Because the detectives had just discovered something none of us knew.

Nolan’s brother had been reported missing six months earlier.

And the bank records suggested he wasn’t missing at all.

Someone had been using his identity.

Someone who had been moving money through accounts connected to my mother’s property.

Then the detective quietly said:

“Mara, we need to ask you something very important.”

“What?”

“Did your husband ever tell you that your father left behind a second property?”

I stared at him.

“My father only owned one house.”

The detective shook his head.

“That’s what everyone thought.”

He placed an old deed on the table.

And when I saw the name written on it, I realized this case was much bigger than my husband’s affair.

Because my father had apparently left behind another property…

and someone had been trying to hide it from my family for nearly twenty years.
