PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND MAYA’S MANSION

PART 2 — THE SECRET BEHIND MAYA’S MANSION

The bronze doors closed behind me.

For the first time in years, I felt like I could breathe.

My mother stood beside me, still holding Noah’s hand.

She looked around the enormous foyer in disbelief.

“Maya…”

I smiled gently.

“You’re safe now, Mom.”

She looked toward the windows.

Across the street, Derek was still standing in front of our old house.

Marjorie was screaming at him.

But I couldn’t hear what she was saying.

The mansion was completely silent.

Warm.

Cool.

Peaceful.

Exactly the way my mother deserved to feel.

I took her upstairs to the bedroom I had prepared months earlier.

It had a private bathroom, a comfortable chair beside the window, and a small balcony overlooking the garden.

My mother touched the curtains.

“You prepared all this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Long before I knew I would need it.”

She looked at me.

“What were you planning?”

I sat beside her.

“Nothing.”

“Then why did you buy this house?”

I took a deep breath.

“Because I knew one day I might have to choose between protecting my family and protecting you.”

My mother became quiet.

Then she whispered:

“You knew they would treat me this way?”

“I hoped they wouldn’t.”

I reached for her hand.

“But I stopped trusting Derek a long time ago.”

That was the truth.

I had never told anyone, but three years earlier, I had discovered that Derek had been secretly borrowing money against our shared accounts.

He always had an explanation.

Business expenses.

Unexpected bills.

Temporary loans.

I believed him.

Until I found something that didn’t make sense.

Large payments had been going to an account I didn’t recognize.

The account belonged to Marjorie.

I had confronted Derek.

He denied everything.

So I stopped arguing.

Instead, I started protecting myself.

I opened separate accounts.

Moved my investments.

Purchased the mansion.

And quietly transferred ownership of several properties into a family trust.

Derek knew nothing about any of it.

I thought I would never need those protections.

Until today.

My mother suddenly looked worried.

“What about Noah?”

I smiled.

“He’s staying here.”

Then I heard a loud pounding on the front gate.

Derek.

He had brought Marjorie with him.

I walked downstairs.

Derek stood outside the gate, furious.

“Open this door!”

I didn’t move.

“You can’t just take my son!”

I looked at him through the glass.

“You mean our son.”

“He belongs in his home!”

I shook my head.

“His home is wherever he is safe.”

Marjorie stepped forward.

“You are destroying this family!”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

“You did that when you decided my mother was your servant.”

Derek’s face reddened.

“You’re my wife!”

“And that doesn’t make you my owner.”

He stared at me.

Then his voice changed.

He became calmer.

Almost too calm.

“Maya, let’s talk privately.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“No.”

He looked toward Marjorie.

Then back at me.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

I opened the front gate remotely.

For a second, Derek looked relieved.

Then I pointed toward the driveway.

“Go home.”

He stopped.

“Why?”

“Because tomorrow morning, you’re going to receive something.”

“What?”

“A package.”

His expression changed.

“What package?”

“The one containing every bank statement, property record, and financial transfer I’ve collected for the last three years.”

Derek went completely silent.

Marjorie looked at him.

“What is she talking about?”

He didn’t answer.

That was when I knew.

He had been hiding something from her too.

I turned away from the gate.

But before I could walk inside, my attorney called.

“Maya, we have a problem.”

I stopped.

“What happened?”

“There’s been an emergency filing.”

“What kind?”

“A petition for temporary custody of Noah.”

My heart dropped.

“Who filed it?”

There was a long pause.

Then my attorney said something that made my blood run cold.

“Derek is claiming that your mother is mentally incapable of caring for a child.”

I looked toward my mother upstairs.

Then I looked at Noah.

Suddenly, I understood.

This was no longer about the house.

It was about control.

And Derek had no idea that I had already prepared for this exact possibility.

Because the mansion wasn’t my biggest secret.

My biggest secret was the legal document sitting inside my attorney’s safe.

A document that could change everything.

And when Derek finally saw it…

he would realize that the woman he had spent six years underestimating had been preparing to leave him long before he ever realized it.
