PART 2 — WHAT MY DAUGHTER SAW BEHIND HIS EAR

PART 2 — WHAT MY DAUGHTER SAW BEHIND HIS EAR

I stepped closer to Desmond.

“Don’t move.”

He looked at me nervously.

“What?”

I pointed toward the side of his head.

“Just stay still.”

Nora was still staring at the exact same spot.

“There, Mommy.”

I moved closer.

Then I saw it.

A tiny scar.

It curved behind Desmond’s ear in almost the exact shape as the scar Julian had received years earlier after an accident.

My heart began pounding.

Julian had always had that scar.

I had kissed it countless times.

I knew every detail of it.

But this couldn’t be possible.

Julian was dead.

I had watched him take his final breath.

I had held his hand at the hospital.

I had identified his body.

There was no way.

I looked at Desmond.

“Where did you get that scar?”

His face changed.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

Nora suddenly reached toward him.

“Daddy has it.”

Desmond stepped backward.

“Nora, that’s enough.”

His voice sounded frightened.

Not annoyed.

Frightened.

I stared at him.

“Why are you scared?”

He didn’t answer.

One of the guests approached us.

“Is everything okay?”

Desmond immediately smiled.

“Everything’s fine.”

But it wasn’t.

I took Nora’s hand.

“We’re leaving.”

Desmond grabbed my arm.

“Wait.”

I pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.”

His expression broke.

“Please listen to me.”

“Tell me why you have my husband’s scar.”

He looked around the room.

Then quietly said:

“Not here.”

Those two words changed everything.

I took Nora home.

That night, I couldn’t sleep.

I kept thinking about the scar.

About Nora’s reaction.

About the way Desmond had looked at me.

At three in the morning, I went into the living room and opened the box where I kept Julian’s belongings.

His wedding ring.

His old wallet.

Photographs.

Medical records.

And a photograph from the hospital.

I stared at Julian’s face.

Then I looked at the scar behind his ear.

It was identical.

I called Desmond.

He didn’t answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

The next morning, I drove to his house.

His car was gone.

The front door was unlocked.

I stepped inside.

“Desmond?”

No answer.

The house looked different.

Several drawers were open.

A suitcase was missing.

And on the kitchen counter was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

My hands began shaking.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

I nearly dropped it.

It showed Julian.

Alive.

Standing beside Desmond.

The date on the photograph was six months after Julian’s supposed death.

I couldn’t breathe.

I flipped the photograph over.

There was a handwritten message.

You were never supposed to see this.

I read it again.

Then I noticed something else.

A second line had been written underneath.

Julian didn’t die in that hospital.

My knees became weak.

I sat down.

For a year, I had mourned my husband.

I had raised our daughter alone.

I had believed I was a widow.

But now I was staring at proof that everything I believed about the worst day of my life might have been a lie.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

I turned around.

Desmond was standing in the doorway.

His face was pale.

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

Then he whispered:

“Now you know.”

I stood up.

“Where is my husband?”

Desmond closed the door.

“He’s alive.”

My heart stopped.

“Where?”

Desmond looked toward Nora’s photograph hanging on the wall.

Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.

“He’s been watching over you and Nora this entire year.”
