PART 2 — THE WOMAN CONRAD BLACKWELL FEARED
The ballroom was completely silent.
I looked at Conrad.
For the first time that evening, the confidence had disappeared from his face.
“You asked who I am,” I said calmly.
“You really should have checked before humiliating me in front of four hundred people.”
Conrad lowered the microphone.
“Marian, I think you’ve misunderstood—”
“No.”
I raised one hand.
“You knew exactly what you were doing.”
Elena stood beside her chair.
“Mom, please tell me what’s going on.”
I looked at my daughter.
“It’s time you knew the truth too.”
Then I turned back toward Conrad.
“My name wasn’t always Marian Cross.”
A murmur moved through the ballroom.
“I was once Marian Vale.”
The moment I said the name, Conrad’s face went completely white.
His attorney whispered something into his ear.
Conrad shook his head.
“No.”
I smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
One of the older guests stood.
“Marian Vale?”
Another guest looked at his phone.
“That’s impossible.”
I continued.
“Twenty-eight years ago, I was the chief financial auditor for Blackwell Industries.”
Elena’s eyes widened.
“You worked for them?”
“I didn’t just work for them.”
I looked directly at Conrad.
“I was the person who discovered what your future father-in-law had been doing.”
The room became even quieter.
Conrad stepped toward me.
“You have no right to bring this up.”
“I have every right.”
I reached into my handbag.
Then I pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was a faded photograph.
It showed a much younger Conrad standing beside several company executives.
On the back was a date.
Twenty-eight years earlier.
I handed the photograph to Elena.
“This was taken three days before I resigned.”
Elena looked at it.
“What happened?”
I took a breath.
“I discovered that millions of dollars were being moved through shell companies.”
The guests began whispering.
“The money wasn’t going to the company.”
I looked at Conrad.
“It was being diverted into private accounts.”
Conrad’s attorney stepped forward.
“This is ancient history.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I pulled out another document.
“It isn’t history when the same accounts are still active.”
Conrad froze.
The corporate attorney’s expression changed.
I continued.
“I spent years collecting evidence.”
“Bank records.”
“Transfer documents.”
“Internal emails.”
“Everything.”
Conrad stared at me.
“You said you destroyed those files.”
I smiled.
“I never said that.”
The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Elena looked at me.
“Mom…”
I turned toward her.
“When your father left us, I didn’t tell you the whole story.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Why?”
“Because I was protecting you.”
I explained that Victor had disappeared after discovering that Conrad’s company was involved in illegal financial transactions.
He had been terrified.
Then he disappeared.
For years, I believed he had simply abandoned us.
But I eventually discovered the truth.
Victor had been threatened.
And Conrad had known about it.
Elena covered her mouth.
“No…”
Noah stepped closer to her.
“Dad?”
Conrad didn’t answer.
I looked at him.
“You thought I stayed silent because I was powerless.”
“You thought I was just a poor single mother who had no connections.”
I placed the final document on the table.
“You were wrong.”
Conrad’s attorney picked it up.
His hands began shaking.
“This is…”
“Yes,” I said.
“The original audit.”
The attorney looked at Conrad.
“If this is authentic, the statute of limitations may not protect the company.”
Conrad’s face hardened.
“You can’t do this to me.”
“I didn’t do anything to you.”
I looked around the ballroom.
“You did this to yourself.”
Then something unexpected happened.
Senator Owen Mercer stood.
“I remember this case.”
Everyone turned toward him.
He looked at me.
“Marian Vale was the auditor who tried to expose the Blackwell financial network.”
Conrad’s expression collapsed.
Senator Mercer continued.
“She disappeared from the industry shortly afterward.”
I nodded.
“I didn’t disappear.”
“I became a mother.”
The ballroom went silent again.
“I chose Elena over revenge.”
My daughter walked toward me.
Tears were streaming down her face.
“You protected me all these years?”
I nodded.
“I wanted you to have a normal life.”
Then Conrad suddenly laughed.
It was a nervous, desperate laugh.
“You think you won?”
I looked at him.
“No.”
“I think you finally have to answer for what you did.”
Conrad’s phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Then he answered.
“Hello?”
He listened for several seconds.
His hand began trembling.
Finally, he whispered:
“They found the account?”
I looked at his face.
He slowly ended the call.
Then he looked at me.
And I knew.
The evidence I had kept hidden for twenty-eight years had just triggered something much bigger.
Because the person who had called Conrad wasn’t a lawyer.
It wasn’t his bank.
It wasn’t his company.
It was a federal investigator.
And they had just informed him that the government had opened a new investigation into Blackwell Industries.
But there was one thing none of us knew yet.
The investigation wasn’t only about money.
It was about what happened to Elena’s father.
And I had a terrible feeling that Victor was still alive.
