I OPENED THE PACKAGE UNDER MY HUSBAND’S MATTRESS—BUT THE LAST THING INSIDE MADE ME REALIZE ADRIAN HAD BEEN HIDING THIS FOR YEARS

PART 2 — I OPENED THE PACKAGE UNDER MY HUSBAND’S MATTRESS—BUT THE LAST THING INSIDE MADE ME REALIZE ADRIAN HAD BEEN HIDING THIS FOR YEARS

I sat on the bedroom floor, staring at the contents of the package.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

Inside were photographs.

Dozens of them.

They showed a woman I had never seen before.

She appeared to be in her late thirties, with dark hair and a small scar above her eyebrow.

In some photographs, she was standing outside a restaurant.

In others, she was getting into a silver sedan.

Then I noticed something that made my stomach tighten.

The photographs had dates written on the backs.

The oldest one was dated six years ago.

The newest had been taken only three weeks earlier.

My hands began to shake.

Six years.

Adrian and I had been married for seven years.

Why had my husband been secretly photographing this woman for almost our entire marriage?

Then I found an envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not my nickname.

Not “Honey.”

My full legal name.

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

“If you’re reading this, Adrian didn’t have a choice.”

I read it again.

Then again.

What did that mean?

I continued.

“He has been protecting you from something your family never told you.”

My breathing became shallow.

My family?

My parents had passed away years earlier.

There was no one left who could possibly know some secret about me.

Then another photograph slipped from the envelope.

I picked it up.

It showed Adrian standing beside the same woman from the other photographs.

But they weren’t alone.

Standing between them was a little girl.

She looked about eight years old.

And she had my eyes.

I dropped the photograph.

“No…”

I picked it up again.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

Same eyes.

Same small nose.

Even the tiny birthmark near her left cheek looked strangely familiar.

Then I noticed the date.

The photograph had been taken seven years ago.

Three weeks before Adrian and I got married.

My entire body went cold.

A sound came from downstairs.

The front door opened.

Adrian was home.

I quickly gathered everything and shoved it back into the package.

But one photograph remained in my hand.

I didn’t have time to hide it.

Adrian appeared in the bedroom doorway.

He stopped.

His eyes moved from me…

to the mattress…

then to the photograph in my hand.

For the first time in seven years, I saw genuine fear on my husband’s face.

“Where did you get that?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

I stood slowly.

“Who is she?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

I held up the photograph of the little girl.

“And who is this?”

His face went completely pale.

I stepped closer.

“Adrian, tell me the truth.”

He closed the bedroom door behind him.

Then he looked at me and said something I never expected to hear.

“She’s your daughter.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“What?”

Adrian swallowed hard.

“Her name is Lily.”

I stared at him.

“That’s impossible.”

“I know.”

“You just said she’s my daughter.”

“Because she is.”

My mind raced.

I had never been pregnant.

At least, that’s what I had always believed.

Then Adrian walked toward the nightstand and pulled out another envelope.

He handed it to me.

Inside was a hospital record.

My name was printed at the top.

The date was seven years ago.

The same week we got married.

I looked at Adrian.

“Why don’t I remember this?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because you were never supposed to remember.”

I felt a chill move through me.

“What did you do to me?”

Adrian shook his head.

“I didn’t.”

“Then who did?”

He looked toward the bedroom window.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered:

“Your father.”

My heart stopped.

“My father was dead before we got married.”

“I know.”

“Then how could he—”

Adrian interrupted me.

“Because he knew he was dying. And before he died, he made me promise that I would keep you away from Lily until you were safe.”

I stared at him in disbelief.

“Safe from what?”

Adrian looked directly into my eyes.

“From your own family.”

Before I could ask another question, his phone began ringing.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“Who is it?”

He didn’t answer.

The phone stopped.

Then a message appeared.

Adrian read it.

His hands began shaking.

I reached for the phone.

He tried to stop me.

But I had already seen the message.

“She found the package. Bring Lily to the old house tonight, or she learns what really happened to her mother.”

I looked at Adrian.

“Her mother?”

He said nothing.

I felt my blood run cold.

Because suddenly I understood something even more terrifying.

If Lily was my daughter…

then someone had spent seven years making me believe I had never given birth.

And whoever had done it had just realized that I was finally starting to remember.
