MY HUSBAND WAS CAUGHT WITH MY BROTHER-IN-LAW’S WIFE—THEN HE GAVE ME THE SAFE COMBINATION. WHAT I FOUND INSIDE REVEALED A SECRET FAR DARKER THAN THEIR AFFAIR.

PART 2

Gavin stared at me across the hospital corridor.

“Celeste, what’s really going on here?”

I looked toward the surgical doors.

“Your brother has been hiding something from both of us.”

Gavin shook his head.

“What could possibly be worse than this?”

I didn’t answer.

I drove straight to Damon’s office.

The building was almost empty at that hour.

I entered the six-digit combination he’d given me and opened the safe.

At first, I saw exactly what I expected.

Cash.

Property documents.

Several passports.

Then I noticed a black folder hidden beneath everything else.

My hands went cold.

The folder was labeled with one word:

“CELESTE.”

I opened it.

Inside were copies of my medical records.

My private financial statements.

Photographs of my daily routine.

Even copies of messages I’d sent to my grandfather years earlier.

Someone had been watching me.

For years.

Then I found a document that made my stomach turn.

It was a draft agreement transferring control of Ashford & Marlowe Enterprises.

My signature was already on it.

Except I had never signed it.

The date was six months in the future.

I stared at the page.

Damon hadn’t simply been planning to divorce me.

He had been preparing to take control of my family’s company by making it appear that I had voluntarily transferred my shares.

Then I found something even worse.

A second folder contained photographs of Gavin.

And Vanessa.

But the photographs weren’t romantic.

They showed Vanessa meeting a man I had never seen before.

The same man appeared beside Damon in another photograph.

I called Gavin immediately.

“Come to Damon’s office.”

“Why?”

“Because your wife wasn’t the only person he was hiding things from.”

Twenty minutes later, Gavin arrived.

I placed the photographs in front of him.

He stared at them.

“Who is that man?”

“I don’t know.”

Gavin picked up another photograph.

Then his face changed.

“I know him.”

“Who?”

“My father’s former attorney.”

I froze.

Gavin continued.

“He disappeared after my father died.”

I looked back at the folders.

Then I noticed a handwritten note tucked inside the back cover.

It contained only one sentence:

“Once Celeste loses control of the company, the Ashford family will finally belong to us.”

I read it twice.

Then I recognized the handwriting.

It wasn’t Damon’s.

It belonged to someone I had trusted for years.

My grandfather’s former business partner.

The man who had helped raise me after my parents died.

I suddenly understood why Damon had married me.

Why he had stayed despite never loving me.

Why he had spent years manipulating my finances.

The affair with Vanessa wasn’t the real plan.

It was a distraction.

A way to make sure I would be emotionally destroyed before the final transfer was executed.

Then my phone rang.

It was the hospital.

“Mrs. Ashford?”

“Yes?”

“Your husband is awake.”

I expected Damon to beg.

Instead, the nurse’s voice became quieter.

“He’s asking for you.”

I drove back to the hospital.

When I entered the room, Damon looked completely different.

No arrogance.

No anger.

Only fear.

He looked at me and whispered:

“You opened the safe.”

“Yes.”

His eyes closed.

“Then they know.”

“Who?”

He swallowed.

“The people who hired me.”

My heart stopped.

“You were hired?”

Damon looked toward the door.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“I didn’t marry you for your money.”

I stared at him.

“I married you because they told me that if I didn’t, they would kill your grandfather’s last surviving witness.”

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“Who was the witness?”

Damon looked directly into my eyes.

Then he whispered:

“Your father.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Because my father had supposedly died twelve years ago.

And suddenly, every lie I’d believed about my family began collapsing at once.
