The Letter Amelia Was Afraid to Give Me

PART 2 — The Letter Amelia Was Afraid to Give Me

I waited until I was home before opening the envelope.

For almost an hour, it sat on the kitchen table.

I couldn’t bring myself to touch it.

That small envelope somehow felt heavier than everything I had carried out of Amelia’s funeral.

Finally, I opened it.

Inside was a single handwritten letter.

My name was written at the top.

Daniel,

I stopped breathing for a moment.

I recognized her handwriting immediately.

I unfolded the paper.

If you’re reading this, then I’m gone.

My eyes filled with tears.

I’m sorry.

I almost put the letter down.

But then I read the next line.

I’m sorry I made you believe I stopped loving you.

My hands began shaking.

For ten years, I had carried that exact belief.

I had convinced myself that whatever we had shared in college had simply meant more to me than it had to her.

But Amelia’s next words changed everything.

The night I left you, I wasn’t angry.

I stared at the page.

I was terrified.

Then came a sentence I wasn’t prepared for.

Someone had discovered something about me that I didn’t want you to know.

I read it again.

And again.

Who?

What had they discovered?

I continued.

I was told that if I stayed with you, your life would be destroyed along with mine.

My heart pounded.

I remembered our final argument.

The things she’d refused to explain.

The way she’d suddenly gone silent.

The next paragraph was even more disturbing.

I thought disappearing would protect you.

A tear fell onto the paper.

I watched you from a distance for years.

I froze.

She had watched me?

All those years when I believed she had forgotten me, Amelia had still been somewhere nearby?

Then I reached the final page.

There were only a few lines.

There is something else you need to know about the woman who gave you this letter.

I looked up.

The woman from the funeral.

Who was she?

I kept reading.

Her name is Claire.

My stomach tightened.

She was the person who helped me disappear.

I stared at the words.

Then I noticed something written beneath them.

An address.

And a date.

The date was tomorrow.

I grabbed my phone and immediately searched the name Claire.

Nothing.

No social media.

No public record I could find.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Then I heard a woman’s trembling voice.

“Daniel?”

“Who is this?”

She took a shaky breath.

“It’s Claire.”

I stood up so quickly my chair fell backward.

“How did you get my number?”

Silence.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because Amelia asked me to call you after her funeral.”

“Why?”

“Because there wasn’t enough time to tell you everything.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What didn’t she tell me?”

Claire began crying.

“Daniel… Amelia didn’t leave you because she wanted to.”

I closed my eyes.

For ten years, I had imagined a hundred explanations.

None of them prepared me for what she said next.

“She was forced to leave.”

My entire body went cold.

“By who?”

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

When she finally spoke, her voice was barely a whisper.

“By someone you still know.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Who?”

Another silence.

Then Claire said:

“Your father.”

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

My father had died three years ago.

And according to Amelia’s letter, he had been involved in the disappearance of the woman I loved.

But there was one problem.

My father had never met Amelia.

At least…

That’s what I had always believed.

Then Claire said:

“There’s something else, Daniel.”

“What?”

“Your father wasn’t trying to keep Amelia away from you.”

She paused.

“He was trying to keep you away from Amelia.”

I looked down at the letter again.

And suddenly, one terrible possibility entered my mind.

What if Amelia hadn’t returned after ten years because she wanted to marry me?

What if she had returned because she knew she was dying…

and finally wanted me to discover the truth my father had taken to his grave?
