PART 2 — The Name Written at the Bottom Changed Everything
“Mom,” Caleb whispered again. “You need to sit down.”
I pulled out the chair across from him.
“What does it say?”
He slowly pushed the letter toward me.
My eyes went straight to the first line.
Caleb,
If you’re reading this, you’re finally eighteen.
My heart began pounding.
I looked at Caleb.
He didn’t say anything.
I kept reading.
I’ve wanted to tell you the truth for years, but your mother made a promise to protect you, and I respected that promise.
I stopped.
“Your mother?”
I looked at Caleb.
He was staring at me.
“Mom… what promise?”
I couldn’t answer.
I had no idea what he was talking about.
I continued reading.
Every birthday, I sent you a small gift because I wanted you to know that someone was thinking about you.
I couldn’t send more.
I couldn’t sign my name.
And I couldn’t come to your home.
Then came the sentence that made my hands go numb.
Because if I did, your mother would know I was still alive.
I dropped the letter.
Caleb stared at me.
“Still alive?”
I couldn’t breathe.
There was only one person who could possibly have written those words.
But it was impossible.
At least, that’s what I had believed for eighteen years.
Caleb picked up the letter.
“Mom… is this from my father?”
I sat there silently.
My son had asked me that question when he was thirteen.
Back then, I had told him no.
Now I couldn’t lie.
The next page explained everything.
Caleb, my name is Michael.
I closed my eyes.
Michael.
The name I had spent eighteen years trying to forget.
The man who had disappeared before Caleb was born.
The man I had told everyone had abandoned us.
But the letter continued.
Your mother believes I left because I didn’t want you.
That isn’t true.
My eyes filled with tears.
I was told that if I tried to contact either of you, Caleb would be taken away.
I looked at my son.
He was crying now.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I wanted to answer.
I wanted to explain every horrible decision I had made.
But the truth was complicated.
And painful.
Before I could say anything, Caleb turned the page.
There was a photograph attached.
It showed a younger man holding a tiny baby.
Caleb stared at it.
“That’s me.”
I nodded.
Then he noticed something behind the photograph.
A hospital bracelet.
His name was printed across it.
BABY CALEB — ROOM 214.
His hands began trembling.
“Mom…”
“I know.”
“No,” he whispered. “Look at the date.”
I looked.
My stomach dropped.
The date was three days after Michael had supposedly disappeared forever.
He hadn’t abandoned us before Caleb was born.
He had been at the hospital.
He had seen his son.
And somehow, someone had made sure I never knew.
Caleb turned the final page.
There were only two sentences.
I’ve watched you grow from a distance.
And I’ve been waiting until you were old enough to choose whether you wanted to know me.
Below that was an address.
And beneath the address was a phone number.
Caleb stared at me.
“Should I call him?”
I didn’t know what to say.
For eighteen years, I had protected my son from a man I believed had abandoned him.
Now I was beginning to wonder if I had been protecting him from the wrong person.
Then Caleb’s phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
He looked at me.
Neither of us moved.
It rang again.
And again.
Finally, Caleb answered.
“Hello?”
There was silence.
Then a man’s trembling voice came through the speaker.
“Caleb?”
My heart stopped.
The voice continued.
“I’ve waited eighteen years to hear you say hello.”
Caleb looked at me with tears in his eyes.
Then the man said something neither of us expected.
“Your mother deserves to know the whole truth too.”
I froze.
“What truth?” I whispered.
The voice on the phone went quiet.
Then he said:
“Ask her why she never told you that I was the one who saved your life.”
Caleb slowly turned toward me.
And suddenly, I realized the birthday envelopes had never been about money.
They had been Michael’s only way of staying alive in his son’s life…
without putting him in danger.
