THE HOSPITAL SECRET MY EX-WIFE COULDN’T HIDE ANYMORE — PART 2
Emily stared at our hands for several seconds before finally pulling hers away.
“Michael… you shouldn’t be here.”
“Maybe not,” I said. “But I am. So please tell me what’s happening.”
She looked toward the nurses’ station again.
“I didn’t want you to find out.”
“Find out what?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sick.”
The words were so quiet that, for a moment, I wondered if I had heard them correctly.
“What kind of sick?”
She swallowed.
“Cancer.”
Everything around me seemed to go silent.
The vending machines stopped humming. The carts stopped squeaking. Even the people walking through the hallway seemed to disappear.
“Since when?”
Emily looked down.
“Before we divorced.”
My stomach dropped.
“You knew?”
She nodded.
“I found out three months before you asked me for a divorce.”
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Because I knew you were already unhappy.”
“That doesn’t answer my question.”
She wiped her face with the sleeve of her hospital gown.
“You wanted a life without me, Michael. A family. Children. A normal future.”
Her voice cracked.
“And I knew I couldn’t give you that anymore.”
I felt something break inside me.
“You thought I left because you couldn’t have children?”
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I remembered all those nights when Emily had sat alone at the kitchen table. All those times she had asked me whether I was happy.
And suddenly, every conversation sounded different.
“You should have told me,” I whispered.
“I was scared.”
“Scared of what?”
“That you’d stay because you felt sorry for me.”
I couldn’t speak.
Then she reached for the clipboard beside her chair.
Her fingers trembled as she handed it to me.
I looked at the paperwork.
The diagnosis.
The treatment plan.
The dates.
The words I never wanted to see.
Then I noticed something that made my heart stop.
One line had been highlighted.
PATIENT DECLINED EMERGENCY CONTACT.
I looked at Emily.
“You put nobody down?”
She nodded.
“Why?”
She hesitated.
“Because there wasn’t anyone.”
I shook my head.
“There was me.”
“You were my ex-husband.”
“I was still your husband when you found out.”
She closed her eyes.
“I didn’t know how to ask you to stay.”
That sentence destroyed me.
I sat beside her again.
For the first time since our divorce, I stopped thinking about who had been right and who had been wrong.
I only saw the woman I had once promised I would never abandon.
“Where is your family?” I asked.
Emily looked toward the floor.
“My mother passed away years ago. My father hasn’t spoken to me in twelve years.”
“And your friends?”
She gave a sad smile.
“I stopped calling people.”
I took a deep breath.
“Then you’re not alone anymore.”
She immediately shook her head.
“Michael…”
“No.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it to me.”
She stared at me.
“There’s another reason I didn’t tell you.”
Before I could respond, a doctor stepped out of the nearby treatment room.
“Emily?”
She looked up.
The doctor glanced at me.
“Are you Michael?”
I stood.
“Yes.”
The doctor hesitated.
“Then I think you need to hear this too.”
Emily’s face went completely pale.
The doctor held a folder against his chest.
“We received the latest test results.”
He looked at Emily.
“And something has changed.”
I felt Emily’s fingers tighten around mine.
The doctor lowered his voice.
“The diagnosis we gave you two months ago may not have been the complete story.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
He opened the folder.
“There is evidence suggesting Emily may have been exposed to something that accelerated her condition.”
My blood ran cold.
The doctor looked directly at me.
“And we need to know where she was getting her medication.”
Emily suddenly started crying.
Because she already knew the answer.
And when she finally whispered the name of the person who had been bringing her those pills…
I realized our divorce might have been the least important thing that happened to us.
