HE SIGNED THE NEW WILL — THEN THE DETECTIVE REVEALED WHAT VANESSA HAD DONE

Arthur’s hand trembled as he placed the pen on the final page.

The attorney watched carefully.

“Mr. Vance, are you certain?”

Arthur looked toward Caleb.

“Yes.”

His voice was barely audible.

“I’ve never been more certain of anything.”

The new document did not simply change who would inherit Arthur’s fortune.

It also created a trust for Caleb’s younger sister, Mia, covering the medical treatment she desperately needed.

But Arthur had added one more condition.

Every financial record connected to Vanessa would be reviewed independently.

Every transfer.

Every account.

Every unusual medical expense.

Every prescription.

Nothing would be hidden.

The attorney closed the folder.

“Then it’s done.”

Arthur leaned back against his pillow.

For the first time in months, he smiled.

Not because he was certain he would survive.

Because he knew that if he didn’t…

Vanessa would not inherit what she believed was already hers.

Across Chicago, Vanessa was celebrating.

She sat at an expensive restaurant with Julian, champagne glasses between them.

“To freedom,” Julian said.

Vanessa smiled.

“To our future.”

Her phone buzzed.

She glanced at the screen.

It was a message from the hospital.

Mr. Vance has requested additional toxicology testing.

Her smile disappeared.

Julian noticed.

“What is it?”

“Nothing.”

But Vanessa’s hands had begun shaking.

She immediately called the hospital.

A nurse answered.

“I’m Arthur’s wife.”

“Yes, Mrs. Vance?”

“Why are additional tests being ordered?”

There was a pause.

“His attorney requested them.”

Vanessa went silent.

“His attorney?”

“Yes.”

The call ended.

Julian leaned across the table.

“What happened?”

Vanessa whispered:

“He knows.”

“What does he know?”

“I don’t know.”

But she did.

Or at least, she suspected.

The following morning, detectives arrived at St. Jude Medical Center.

They didn’t come through the main entrance.

They went directly to Arthur’s room.

One of them introduced himself as Detective Marcus Reed.

“Mr. Vance, we’re investigating a possible poisoning.”

Arthur looked at him.

“I know.”

The detective placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.

Inside was a small container of supplements.

“Your wife said these were vitamins.”

Arthur nodded.

“She gave them to me every night.”

The detective opened a folder.

“According to the pharmacy records, you weren’t prescribed these.”

Arthur stared at the container.

“Then what were they?”

“We’re still testing them.”

The detective turned another page.

“But we’ve already found something.”

He showed Arthur a series of photographs.

The first showed Vanessa entering a pharmacy.

The second showed her purchasing a prescription medication.

The third showed her meeting Julian in a parking garage.

And the fourth showed Julian transferring money into an account registered under a false name.

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

“How long have you been investigating?”

“Three weeks.”

Arthur looked confused.

“Three weeks?”

Detective Reed nodded.

“You weren’t the first person who suspected something was wrong.”

Arthur’s eyes widened.

“Who was?”

The detective closed the folder.

“Your wife made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“She told someone what she was doing.”

Arthur waited.

“Who?”

“Your wife’s sister.”

Arthur stared at him.

“Vanessa’s sister came to us two weeks ago.”

“She provided messages, photographs, and recordings.”

Arthur slowly closed his eyes.

Everything was finally making sense.

The strange phone calls.

The unexplained arguments.

The nights Vanessa disappeared.

Someone had been watching her.

Someone had been collecting evidence.

Then the door opened.

Caleb stepped inside.

He looked nervous.

“Mr. Vance?”

Arthur nodded.

Caleb held out his phone.

“I found something.”

“What?”

“A voicemail.”

He played it.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“Julian, Arthur won’t make it past Friday. Once the doctors declare him gone, the money transfers automatically. We just need to stay calm.”

The room went completely silent.

Detective Reed looked at Arthur.

“That recording changes everything.”

Arthur looked toward the window.

Rain continued falling over Chicago.

Five days.

That was what the doctors had given him.

But now there was something else.

Evidence.

A motive.

A confession.

And a woman who believed she was only days away from inheriting $82 million.

Detective Reed stood.

“Mr. Vance, we’re going to arrest Vanessa and Julian.”

Arthur stopped him.

“Not yet.”

The detective frowned.

“Why?”

Arthur looked at the evidence on the table.

“Because she still thinks I’m dying.”

A faint smile appeared on his face.

“I want her to keep talking.”

And that was when Detective Reed understood.

Arthur wasn’t simply trying to save his fortune.

He was setting a trap.

The next afternoon, Vanessa walked into Arthur’s hospital room carrying flowers.

She smiled sweetly.

“My poor husband.”

Arthur looked at her.

“Vanessa.”

“Yes, darling?”

“I don’t think I have much time left.”

Her eyes briefly flashed with excitement before she lowered them.

“Oh, Arthur.”

He reached for her hand.

“I want you to know something.”

She leaned closer.

“What?”

Arthur whispered:

“I changed my will.”

For one terrifying second, Vanessa stopped breathing.

Then she smiled.

“What did you change?”

Arthur looked directly into her eyes.

“Everything.”

And hidden behind the hospital curtain…

Detective Reed was listening to every word.
