At 9 O’Clock, My Dying Neighbor Finally Told Me Why She Had Chosen Me

Part 2 — At 9 O’Clock, My Dying Neighbor Finally Told Me Why She Had Chosen Me

The night Winifred’s relatives threatened to call the police, I didn’t fight them.

I simply went back inside.

At exactly nine o’clock, I closed her bedroom door and pulled the wooden chair beside her bed.

Winifred was awake.

“Did they come?” she whispered.

I nodded.

“They think I’m stealing from you.”

She smiled weakly.

“They’ve always thought money was the only thing worth stealing.”

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

For the first time, she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small blue envelope.

“My dear, it’s time.”

I didn’t understand.

Then I saw my own name written across the front.

My hands started shaking.

“Why is my name on this?”

“Because you’ve been carrying my secret for twenty years without knowing it.”

I stared at her.

Winifred took a slow breath.

“When you were eleven, you saved my life.”

I remembered that night.

Barely.

There had been a terrible winter storm. My parents were away, and I’d looked outside my bedroom window and seen Winifred lying near her front steps.

I had run across the street, called for help, and stayed beside her until the ambulance arrived.

She had survived.

But I had never understood why she looked at me differently afterward.

“I remember,” I whispered.

Winifred nodded.

“I never forgot you.”

She opened the envelope.

Inside was an old photograph.

It showed me as a child standing beside my parents.

But there was another photograph underneath.

It showed Winifred holding a newborn baby.

I looked closer.

The baby’s face was familiar.

Very familiar.

“Who is that?”

Winifred’s eyes filled with tears.

“My son.”

I looked at her.

“You told everyone you never had children.”

“I told everyone that because I had to.”

She explained that decades earlier, her son had been taken from her after a family dispute.

She spent years trying to find him.

Eventually, she discovered that he had died young.

But before he died, he had left behind something she never knew existed.

A daughter.

My heart started pounding.

“Your granddaughter?”

Winifred nodded.

“And that’s why you chose me?”

She reached for my hand.

“You’re not my granddaughter.”

I exhaled.

Then she continued.

“But your mother knew my son.”

I froze.

“My mother?”

Winifred nodded.

“Your mother was his closest friend. She promised him she would protect his daughter if anything ever happened.”

I stared at the photograph.

There was a little girl standing beside my mother.

And suddenly, I recognized her.

“She looks like…”

Winifred smiled.

“Your mother.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then Winifred revealed the truth.

The little girl in the photograph was my mother.

She had been raised by another family for several years after losing her own parents.

Winifred had known her before my mother met my father.

She had been part of my family’s history all along.

But there was something else.

Winifred pushed a second envelope toward me.

“This is why my relatives are suddenly interested in my house.”

Inside were bank records and legal documents.

Her relatives weren’t worried about her.

They wanted her property.

Winifred had already changed her will.

Almost everything was going to a medical foundation she had created years earlier.

But one small inheritance had been set aside.

For me.

I immediately shook my head.

“I don’t want your money.”

Winifred smiled.

“I knew you would say that.”

Then she pointed toward a locked wooden box in the corner.

“That’s not money.”

I opened it.

Inside was a collection of letters.

Hundreds of them.

All written by my mother.

Letters she had written to Winifred over the years.

I sat on the floor and began reading.

The first one started:

“If you’re still alive when my daughter becomes an adult, please tell her the truth about why I left home.”

I stopped.

My mother had died when I was young.

And she’d taken that secret to her grave.

Winifred reached for my hand.

“That’s what I have been trying to tell you every night at nine.”

I looked at her.

“So you weren’t just telling me stories?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“I was giving you back your family.”

Then suddenly, someone pounded on the front door.

A man’s voice shouted from outside.

“We know she’s changed the will! Open this door!”

Winifred looked at me calmly.

“Don’t open it.”

“Why?”

She pointed toward the blue envelope.

“Because there’s one final document in there.”

I opened it.

My blood ran cold.

It wasn’t a will.

It was a police report from twenty years ago.

And the name at the bottom belonged to one of the relatives now standing outside my house.

Winifred looked at me and whispered:

“Now you know why they are so desperate to get inside.”
