PART 2 — He Thought His Family Was Caring for His Wife and Newborn… Until He Opened the Refrigerator
Daniel had been looking forward to surprising his wife.
After three exhausting weeks away for work, he finally arrived home earlier than expected.
He imagined finding his wife, Emma, smiling with their newborn daughter in her arms.
Instead, the house was strangely quiet.
No music.
No laughter.
No smell of dinner.
Daniel walked into the kitchen and stopped.
Emma was sitting at the table with the baby sleeping against her chest.
She looked exhausted.
Her face was pale.
Her clothes hung loosely around her body.
“Emma?”
She looked up.
For a moment, she didn’t say anything.
Then she whispered:
“You’re home early.”
Daniel smiled nervously.
“I wanted to surprise you.”
Emma looked away.
“I’m glad you’re here.”
Something about her voice immediately worried him.
He opened the refrigerator.
It was almost empty.
A carton of milk.
Half a loaf of bread.
And a few eggs.
Daniel stared at it.
“When did you last eat?”
Emma hesitated.
“Yesterday.”
His smile disappeared.
“Yesterday?”
She nodded.
“I didn’t want to spend the grocery money.”
“What grocery money?”
Emma looked confused.
“The money your mother sends me.”
“My mother?”
“She said she was handling everything while you were away.”
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
His mother had promised him she would help Emma with groceries, the baby, and household expenses while he was traveling.
He had transferred thousands of dollars into the family account specifically for that purpose.
“Where is everyone?”
Emma lowered her eyes.
“Your parents and your sister left yesterday.”
“Left for where?”
She finally looked at him.
“Cancún.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Cancún?”
Emma nodded.
“They said it was a family vacation.”
He pulled out his phone and checked the account.
His blood ran cold.
Nearly all the money he had transferred was gone.
Flights.
Luxury hotel.
Spa appointments.
Restaurants.
Shopping.
Thousands of dollars had been spent while his wife and newborn were sitting at home without enough food.
Daniel looked at Emma.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She started crying.
“Your mother told me you’d be angry if I bothered you while you were working.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
He suddenly remembered every message his mother had sent.
“Emma is doing fine.”
“She has everything she needs.”
“Don’t worry about home.”
He had believed every word.
Then his daughter began crying.
Emma tried to stand, but she swayed.
Daniel caught her arm.
“You’re not okay.”
“I’ve just been tired.”
He looked at her carefully.
“No. Something is wrong.”
He immediately took Emma and the baby to the doctor.
The doctor examined her and looked concerned.
“She is severely exhausted and hasn’t been eating properly.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“How long?”
The doctor looked at Emma.
“Several weeks.”
Daniel felt sick.
Several weeks.
While he had been sending money.
While his family had been telling him everything was fine.
That evening, Daniel called his mother.
She answered cheerfully.
“Daniel! How was your trip?”
He said nothing for several seconds.
Then:
“Where is my money?”
Silence.
His mother’s voice changed.
“What do you mean?”
“You spent the money I sent for Emma and the baby.”
“We deserved a vacation too.”
Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.
“You left my wife and newborn without food.”
His mother scoffed.
“Emma is dramatic. She could have ordered something.”
Daniel looked at his wife sitting silently on the couch.
“No.”
His voice became cold.
“She shouldn’t have had to beg anyone for food in her own home.”
Then his mother said something that made him realize this was much bigger than a vacation.
“You’re choosing her over your family?”
Daniel stared at the phone.
“No.”
He paused.
“I’m choosing my wife and daughter over people who betrayed them.”
His mother hung up.
Daniel thought the situation was finally clear.
But the next morning, he received a message from the bank.
There had been another withdrawal.
Not from the family account.
From his private savings.
And the transaction had been authorized using a signature he recognized immediately.
His mother’s.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Someone had been accessing his finances for months.
And suddenly he realized the luxury vacation wasn’t the worst thing his family had done.
They had been hiding something much bigger.
Something that could cost Daniel everything he had worked for.
And when he opened the bank statement attached to the message…
he saw a payment made to a lawyer.
**A lawyer handling a document his family never wanted him to discover.**
