PART 2 — I Opened the Basement Door… and Realized Daniel Had Lied About Everything
The smell hit me so hard that I immediately covered my mouth.
It wasn’t the smell of old furniture.
It wasn’t mold.
It was something far stranger.
Grace squeezed my hand.
“Mommy’s down there.”
I looked at her.
“Sweetheart, what do you mean?”
She pointed into the darkness.
“She said she lives here.”
My stomach tightened.
I switched on the basement light.
The bulb flickered twice before staying on.
At first, all I could see were cardboard boxes, old furniture, and shelves covered with dusty blankets.
Then I noticed something on the far wall.
Photographs.
Dozens of them.
Pictures of Emily and Grace as babies.
Pictures of Daniel holding them.
Pictures of a woman I immediately recognized from the photographs Daniel had shown me when we first started dating.
His first wife.
But something was wrong.
She wasn’t smiling in any of them.
She looked frightened.
I stepped closer.
Then I noticed the dates written beneath the photographs.
They were from years AFTER the accident Daniel had told me about.
My hands began shaking.
“Grace…”
She looked up at me innocently.
“That’s Mommy.”
I swallowed.
“Where is she?”
Grace pointed toward the back of the basement.
“She stays behind that door.”
There was another door.
One I had never seen.
It was secured with a heavy padlock.
I suddenly remembered every excuse Daniel had given me.
The junk.
The dangerous stairs.
The reason the girls weren’t allowed downstairs.
None of it made sense anymore.
I reached for the handle.
Grace whispered, “Mommy told me not to let Daddy know she talks to us.”
My blood ran cold.
“Your mother talks to you?”
Grace nodded.
“She says Daddy gets angry.”
I stared at the little girl.
“Grace, where is your mother right now?”
She pointed at the locked door.
“Right there.”
I felt dizzy.
Then I heard something.
A faint sound.
Three soft knocks.
Coming from behind the door.
I stepped backward.
Emily suddenly started crying.
“Mommy?”
Another three knocks.
This time louder.
I grabbed my phone and called Daniel.
He didn’t answer.
I called again.
Still nothing.
Then I called emergency services.
But before I could finish explaining what was happening, I heard a car pull into the driveway.
Daniel was home.
Much earlier than usual.
Grace grabbed my arm.
“Don’t tell Daddy.”
The basement door suddenly opened upstairs.
Footsteps began coming down the stairs.
Slow.
Heavy.
One step at a time.
Daniel appeared at the bottom.
His face changed the instant he saw the open basement door.
He didn’t look surprised.
He looked terrified.
“What did you do?” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“What is behind that door?”
He didn’t answer.
Then Emily ran toward him.
“Daddy, Mommy wants to come out!”
Daniel went completely pale.
For the first time since I’d known him, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
He rushed toward the second door.
I stepped in front of him.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
I held up my phone.
“Tell me the truth.”
His voice became barely audible.
“She was never killed in the accident.”
The room seemed to spin.
“What?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“She survived.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“You told me she died.”
“I know.”
“Why?”
He looked toward the locked room.
“Because if anyone found out she was alive, everything would come apart.”
Then someone behind the door whispered my name.
Not Daniel’s.
Mine.
I froze.
Because I had never met that woman before.
So how did she know my name?
Daniel closed his eyes.
And then she said something that made my entire body go cold.
“Please don’t trust him.”
