I Thought Richard Was Stalking Me on the Cruise… Then the Captain Called My Name and Told Me Why My Suitcase Was Outside His Cabin

PART 2 — I Thought Richard Was Stalking Me on the Cruise… Then the Captain Called My Name and Told Me Why My Suitcase Was Outside His Cabin

I refused to move.

Richard stood in the doorway of Cabin 018 while the ship’s alarm continued screaming somewhere above us.

“Eleanor, you need to trust me.”

I almost laughed.

“Trust you?”

I pointed toward the photographs scattered across the bed.

“You have pictures of me taken before we even met.”

Richard’s face tightened.

“I know how this looks.”

“It looks exactly like what it is.”

He stepped toward me.

I stepped backward.

Then another voice echoed through the corridor.

“Mrs. Bennett?”

I turned.

A uniformed security officer was running toward us.

Behind him were two more crew members.

And then the ship’s captain appeared.

“Mrs. Bennett,” he said urgently, “please come with us.”

I looked at Richard.

“Why does the captain know my name?”

Nobody answered.

The security officer reached my suitcase and carefully moved it away from the cabin door.

Then he looked at Richard.

“Did you tell her?”

Richard shook his head.

“I was trying to.”

The captain sighed.

“Then we’re out of time.”

My heart pounded.

“What am I supposed to know?”

The captain looked at me with an expression I will never forget.

“Your suitcase was never supposed to be in this corridor.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“It was moved from your cabin by someone wearing a crew uniform.”

Richard stepped forward.

“And we know who.”

The security officer opened a tablet.

A video appeared.

It showed a man entering my cabin while I was downstairs at dinner.

He opened my suitcase.

Removed several items.

Then placed something inside before wheeling it away.

I stared at the screen.

“Who is that?”

The officer zoomed in.

My stomach dropped.

I recognized him.

He had been sitting at the breakfast buffet on the first morning.

Then again near the pool.

Then outside the elevator.

I had assumed he was another passenger.

Richard spoke quietly.

“He isn’t a passenger.”

The captain nodded.

“He boarded using someone else’s identification.”

Suddenly, every strange moment from the past week came rushing back.

The man who had asked what cabin I was staying in.

The stranger who seemed to appear wherever I went.

The feeling that someone had been watching me.

Then I remembered something else.

My late husband’s name.

It was written on one of the photographs.

I turned toward Richard.

“Why would someone be following me?”

Richard looked at the captain.

The captain hesitated.

Then he handed me a sealed envelope.

“This was found inside your suitcase.”

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of my husband.

Taken years before he died.

On the back was a handwritten sentence:

She still doesn’t know what he left her.

I couldn’t breathe.

Richard looked at me carefully.

“Eleanor, I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“I didn’t meet you on this cruise by accident.”

My entire body went cold.

“You knew me?”

“Not personally.”

He swallowed.

“Your husband contacted me six months before he died.”

I stared at him.

“What did he want?”

Richard reached into his jacket and pulled out a second envelope.

He placed it in my hand.

“Your husband asked me to find you if anyone ever came looking for what he left behind.”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a key.

And a short handwritten note in my husband’s unmistakable handwriting.

Eleanor, if Richard ever gives you this key, do not trust anyone who tells you I died without a reason.

My knees nearly buckled.

Because suddenly, the cruise wasn’t a romantic second chance.

It was a trap someone had been preparing for years.

And Richard wasn’t the man I thought I had fallen in love with.

He was the man my husband had trusted with one final secret.

But before I could ask what the key opened, the ship suddenly began slowing down.

The captain looked toward the corridor.

Then his radio crackled.

His face went pale.

“Captain,” someone said through the radio, “we’ve found the man from the security footage.”

A pause.

“He’s not alone.”

The captain looked directly at me.

“And they’re heading for Mrs. Bennett’s cabin.”
