LILY SAID “DADDY’S THERE” — THEN I SAW WHAT WAS HIDDEN BEHIND MY BOSS’S EAR
I couldn’t move.
For several seconds, I simply stared at the tiny object tucked behind Gerald’s ear.
It wasn’t a hearing aid.
It wasn’t jewelry.
It was a small, flesh-colored device.
A microphone.
My heart began pounding.
I stepped closer.
Gerald noticed me.
His face changed immediately.
He touched the area behind his ear and turned away.
“Is everything all right?” his business partner asked.
I didn’t answer.
I looked at Gerald.
Then at Lily.
My daughter was standing beside the pool, watching him with complete certainty.
“Daddy’s there,” she whispered again.
Gerald’s face went completely white.
“She’s just confused,” he said quickly.
But I knew Lily.
She had spent the past year looking at photographs of her father.
She knew his face.
His voice.
His favorite shirt.
Even the little scar above his eyebrow.
I looked at the device again.
Then Gerald suddenly grabbed my wrist.
“Come inside,” he whispered.
His voice was different now.
Not gentle.
Not concerned.
Afraid.
I pulled my hand away.
“Why are you wearing that?”
He glanced around the pool area.
Several guests were laughing nearby, completely unaware of what was happening.
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
He lowered his voice.
“That device isn’t mine.”
My stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?”
Gerald looked toward the house.
Then toward Lily.
Finally, he said something that made my knees feel weak.
“Your husband gave it to me.”
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.”
“Nathaniel gave it to me three days before he died.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I were.”
Gerald pulled me into a quiet hallway away from the guests.
He reached behind his ear and carefully removed the device.
Then he placed it in my palm.
“Your husband told me never to activate it unless you were in danger.”
I stared at the tiny microphone.
“Why would Nathaniel give you something like this?”
Gerald hesitated.
“Because he believed someone was watching you.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
“Gerald, tell me everything.”
He looked at Lily through the glass doors.
Then he whispered:
“Nathaniel wasn’t supposed to die when he did.”
My entire body went numb.
“What are you saying?”
Gerald took a deep breath.
“Your husband’s doctors believed his cancer was progressing naturally.”
“But Nathaniel didn’t believe that.”
“He thought someone had been altering his medication.”
I covered my mouth.
Memories came rushing back.
Nathaniel complaining that his pills looked different.
Nathaniel telling me he sometimes felt dizzy after taking them.
Nathaniel asking me not to trust anyone with access to his medical records.
I had thought those were the fears of a dying man.
Gerald continued.
“Before he died, Nathaniel gave me several recordings.”
“Recordings of what?”
“Conversations.”
“Between whom?”
Gerald looked directly into my eyes.
“Your husband and someone inside your company.”
My heart stopped.
“My company?”
He nodded.
“And Nathaniel believed the person was trying to take control of something he had discovered.”
“What had he discovered?”
Gerald didn’t answer.
Instead, he pulled out his phone.
“There is one recording you need to hear.”
He pressed play.
At first, all I heard was static.
Then I heard a voice.
A voice I hadn’t heard in more than a year.
My husband’s voice.
“Gerald, if you’re hearing this, something happened to me.”
I began crying instantly.
Lily heard the recording from the doorway.
She ran toward me.
“Daddy!”
I dropped to my knees and held her tightly.
Nathaniel’s recorded voice continued.
“If my wife ever asks why Lily says I’m still here, don’t dismiss her.”
“She saw something before any of us did.”
My eyes widened.
Gerald looked at me.
The recording continued.
“Lily saw the device.”
“She saw where I hid it.”
“And if she points to someone’s ear, believe her.”
I slowly looked toward Gerald.
Then the recording ended.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Finally, Gerald whispered:
“There’s one more thing.”
He opened another file.
A photograph appeared on his phone.
It showed Nathaniel standing outside a hospital.
Beside him was a man I recognized immediately.
A man who had been at Nathaniel’s funeral.
A man who had hugged me and told me how sorry he was.
My husband’s oncologist.
And behind them stood someone else.
Someone I never expected to see.
Gerald’s business partner.
The same man who was currently standing outside by the pool.
I looked through the glass doors.
He was watching us.
And the moment our eyes met…
He turned around and walked quickly toward the exit.
Gerald grabbed my arm.
“Don’t let him leave.”
I pulled out my phone.
This time, I wasn’t thinking about Lily’s strange words.
I wasn’t thinking about ghosts.
I was thinking about my husband’s final warning.
And for the first time since Nathaniel died, I realized something terrifying.
Lily hadn’t been pointing at Gerald’s ear because she thought her father was hiding there.
She had been pointing because Nathaniel had left something behind that could finally expose the people who killed him.
And now…
They knew I had found it.
