PART 2 — My Father Left Me a Fortune… But His Lawyer Revealed the Real Reason He Wanted Me Back
I stared at the sealed envelope on the table.
For several seconds, I couldn’t bring myself to touch it.
“My father’s trap?” I finally whispered. “What does that mean?”
The lawyer, Mr. Harrison, pulled out a chair across from me.
“Your father knew you would ask that question.”
My stomach tightened.
He slid another document toward me.
“He also knew you would want to leave immediately after the funeral.”
I looked down.
It was a letter.
My name was written across the front in my father’s handwriting.
Nadia.
My hands began trembling.
I opened it.
The first sentence made my heart stop.
If you’re reading this, then I finally did one thing right. I found my daughter before I died.
I had to stop reading.
For thirty years, I had imagined hundreds of explanations for why my father abandoned me.
None of them had prepared me for what came next.
He explained that after my mother died, he had tried to take me.
But Vanessa’s mother had threatened to destroy him.
She had convinced him that I was better off in foster care while secretly using his grief and financial problems against him.
Then came the part that made me physically sick.
My father had eventually discovered the truth.
He learned that I had been moved through seven different foster homes.
He knew I was struggling.
He knew I had gone without proper winter clothes.
He knew about the Christmases I spent alone.
And he had been sending money.
Not to me.
To the foster agency.
He thought the money was being used for my care.
It wasn’t.
Someone had been diverting it.
Mr. Harrison watched my face.
“Your father spent years trying to discover where the money went.”
“Who took it?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he placed another folder on the table.
“That’s where this becomes complicated.”
I opened it.
Inside were bank records.
Thousands of dollars.
Then hundreds of thousands.
Payments made over decades.
All leading back to one account.
An account controlled by someone inside my father’s household.
I looked up.
“Vanessa?”
Mr. Harrison shook his head.
“No.”
My heart pounded.
“Then who?”
He slowly pushed one final photograph across the table.
I recognized the woman immediately.
My father’s wife.
Vanessa’s mother.
The woman who had supposedly been protecting our family after my mother died.
She had been taking the money intended for me.
For thirty years.
I felt the room spinning.
But Mr. Harrison wasn’t finished.
“Your father didn’t bring you here simply to apologize.”
“What did he want?”
“He wanted you to inherit everything.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“Your father changed his entire estate plan six days before you arrived.”
He opened another document.
The mansion.
The investments.
The company.
The properties.
Everything.
My father had left it all to me.
Except there was one condition.
I had to stay in the house for thirty days.
“Why?”
Mr. Harrison leaned forward.
“Because your father believed the moment Vanessa and her mother discovered you were inheriting everything, they would try to take it back.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
Then I remembered something.
The hallway.
Vanessa asking what I expected after Dad died.
The way she had watched me during those seven days.
She already knew.
“Where is Vanessa now?” I asked.
Mr. Harrison’s expression darkened.
“She hasn’t left the estate.”
My heart sank.
“Why?”
He looked toward the closed bedroom door.
“Because she believes your father left her something.”
Then he lowered his voice.
“And she has no idea that your father left one final piece of evidence specifically for you.”
“What evidence?”
Mr. Harrison reached into his briefcase.
He removed a small black key.
My father’s initials were engraved on it.
“This opens a safe.”
“Where?”
He looked directly at me.
“Inside the room where your mother died.”
My breath caught.
I had never known there was a safe.
I had never even known that room still existed.
Mr. Harrison stood.
“Your father told me something before he died.”
“What?”
He paused at the door.
“He said, ‘When Nadia opens that safe, she will finally understand why I never stopped looking for her.’”
That night, while everyone else slept, I walked toward the locked room at the end of the hallway.
I placed the key inside the lock.
It clicked.
The door slowly opened.
And the moment I turned on the light…
I saw a photograph of my mother sitting beside my father.
But there was something else on the desk.
A second envelope.
And written across it were six words that made my blood run cold:
Nadia, your mother didn’t die naturally.
