PART 2 — My Husband Called Screaming, “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?” He Had No Idea I’d Already Made One Call
I leaned back against the empty wall and listened to David panic.
“What did I do?” I asked calmly.
“You know exactly what you did!”
His voice was shaking.
“You froze the accounts!”
I almost smiled.
“No, David. I didn’t freeze anything.”
There was silence.
Then he whispered, “Then why can’t I access my money?”
“Because it was never your money.”
He started yelling again.
“You can’t do this to me!”
I closed my eyes.
For nine days, while I was working in another state, David had been planning his little Hawaiian escape.
But he had forgotten one very important detail.
The house was mine.
The savings account was mine.
And most importantly, the business account he had been stealing from belonged to my company.
Two years earlier, when David lost his job, I had agreed to let him help with bookkeeping. I trusted my husband.
That trust turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life.
Months ago, I had noticed small withdrawals.
Then larger ones.
At first, David blamed bank fees.
Then he blamed accounting errors.
But I quietly started keeping copies of everything.
Every transfer.
Every withdrawal.
Every strange payment.
And then I discovered something that made my stomach turn.
David wasn’t just taking money.
He had been sending thousands of dollars to the woman he called his “coworker.”
The same woman currently sitting beside him in Hawaii.
So three weeks before my work trip, I met with my attorney.
We separated my personal savings from every account David could access.
I changed the business banking authorization.
And I documented every unauthorized transaction.
I didn’t confront him.
I waited.
Because I wanted him to believe he had won.
And he did.
Until he landed in Hawaii.
Now he was discovering that the luxury vacation he had planned was sitting on a financial cliff.
“Sandy,” he said quietly, “please.”
That was the first time I’d heard fear in his voice.
“You took my money.”
“I was going to pay it back.”
“You emptied my house.”
“I needed a fresh start.”
“You left me with nothing.”
“I thought you had another account!”
I laughed.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“You thought I had another account.”
He went silent.
I continued.
“You never knew how much I had because you never cared enough to ask. You only cared about how much you could take.”
He started crying.
Then he said something that surprised me.
“Sandy, she left.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“She left me at the hotel.”
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
“She found out the money was gone and took the first flight home.”
I looked around my empty house.
For the first time, I didn’t feel abandoned.
I felt free.
Then David whispered:
“She’s already talking to the police.”
My eyes widened.
“What did you do?”
“I didn’t do anything!”
“You stole from me.”
“No! I mean… I may have used the company card.”
“How much?”
Silence.
“How much, David?”
Finally, he answered.
“About eighty thousand.”
I closed my eyes.
Eighty thousand dollars.
The money I had been saving for IVF.
The money I thought would finally help us become parents.
He had spent it trying to impress another woman.
I took a deep breath.
“David?”
“Yes?”
“You should probably call a lawyer.”
“Why?”
“Because my attorney already did.”
He stopped breathing for a second.
Then I heard a knock on my front door.
I opened it.
My attorney stood there holding a folder.
Behind her was a police detective.
And the detective had something in his hand.
A copy of the bank records.
He looked at me and said:
“Mrs. Carter, we found something else.”
“What?”
He opened the folder.
“Your husband didn’t steal only from you.”
My blood ran cold.
“He stole from several other people.”
Then he showed me the final document.
And at the bottom was a name I recognized immediately.
David’s mistress.
She hadn’t simply helped him run away.
She had been helping him steal from me for months.
And now both of them were about to discover the one thing they never expected:
I wasn’t going to chase them.
I was going to let the evidence chase them.
