PART 2 — My Mother-in-Law Arrived With the Police, But She Had No Idea What Adrian Had Just Discovered
Adrian stared at the security monitor.
For several seconds, he didn’t say anything.
Then he looked at me.
“Don’t open that door.”
My heart began pounding.
Diane stood between the two deputies with the confidence of someone who believed she had already won.
One of the deputies knocked again.
“Mr. Carter? We need to speak with you regarding a domestic matter.”
Adrian grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling our attorney.”
Diane immediately shouted through the door.
“Adrian, don’t make this worse! You know what you’ve done!”
He looked at me.
“She still thinks the fake divorce is real.”
Then his phone rang.
The bank.
He answered.
“Mr. Carter, we’ve temporarily frozen the outgoing transfers.”
I exhaled.
But the bank representative continued.
“There’s something else you should know.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?”
“The LLC receiving the funds was registered three months ago.”
“Who owns it?”
There was a pause.
“Diane Carter.”
I felt my stomach drop.
Adrian closed his eyes.
His own mother had created a company in her name and was apparently preparing to move nearly half a million dollars out of his business.
But why?
The answer came from somewhere neither of us expected.
Our attorney called.
“Claire, Adrian, listen carefully. I just received copies of the filing.”
“It’s fraudulent,” Adrian said.
“I know.”
“Then why are the deputies here?”
“Because someone also filed an emergency claim saying Claire was attempting to remove company assets.”
I stared at Adrian.
“They’re trying to make me look like the thief.”
Our attorney lowered his voice.
“And that’s not all.”
“What?”
“There is a court hearing scheduled for this morning.”
Adrian looked at the clock.
7:06 a.m.
“How is that possible?”
“Because the filing was submitted last night with an emergency request.”
I walked toward the front window.
Diane was still standing outside.
She looked directly at me.
Then she smiled.
That smile told me everything.
She hadn’t come to argue.
She had come to watch us lose everything.
Adrian finally opened the door, but kept the security chain locked.
“Mom, what did you do?”
Diane’s smile disappeared.
“I protected my son.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I did what had to be done.”
“You transferred $486,000.”
“You were being manipulated.”
“By Claire?”
Diane looked at me.
“Yes.”
I almost laughed.
“You’ve been planning this for months.”
She didn’t answer.
One of the deputies stepped forward.
“Mr. Carter, we need you to come with us voluntarily while this matter is investigated.”
Adrian looked at me.
Then something happened.
His phone buzzed.
A message from the bank.
TRANSFER BLOCKED. SECONDARY ACCOUNT IDENTIFIED.
Adrian opened the attachment.
It showed another account.
Not Diane’s.
Not mine.
A hidden account connected to Carter Property Group.
The balance was over $2.1 million.
I stared at the screen.
“Adrian…”
He looked confused.
“I didn’t know this existed.”
Our attorney immediately said,
“Don’t touch anything. I’m sending someone over.”
Diane suddenly became nervous.
For the first time that morning, she wasn’t smiling.
Adrian noticed.
“Mom.”
She looked away.
“Where did that account come from?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then why do you look terrified?”
She said nothing.
One of the deputies received a phone call.
His expression changed.
He walked toward his partner and whispered something.
Then both officers looked at Diane.
“Ma’am,” one said, “we need to speak with you.”
Her face went pale.
“What?”
“The court clerk just flagged the filing.”
Diane’s breathing became rapid.
The deputy continued.
“The electronic signature doesn’t match Mr. Carter’s verified signature.”
Adrian looked at me.
Then at his mother.
“And the IP address?”
The deputy checked his phone.
“Same address as the filing.”
Diane’s house.
Silence filled the doorway.
Then Adrian asked the question that finally broke her composure.
“Why would you do this to us?”
Diane started crying.
“I was trying to save the family.”
“From what?”
She looked at him.
“Your father’s business wasn’t worth what you think.”
Adrian froze.
“What does that mean?”
Diane wiped her tears.
“Your father left debts.”
“What debts?”
She shook her head.
“Not debts.”
Then she whispered something that made even the deputies go silent.
“Someone has been draining the company for years.”
I looked at Adrian.
“Who?”
Diane stared at me.
And then she said,
“Your father’s former business partner.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“That man died eight years ago.”
“I know.”
“Then how is he draining money from the company?”
Diane reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in your father’s safe.”
Adrian took it.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Only one sentence appeared on the page.
“If you’re reading this, the person you trust most has already taken everything.”
Adrian looked at his mother.
Then at me.
And suddenly the fake divorce, the stolen signature, the $486,000 transfer, and the hidden $2.1 million account didn’t look like separate crimes anymore.
They looked like pieces of one enormous plan.
And just as Adrian unfolded the second page, his face went completely white.
Because the handwriting belonged to someone we never expected.
Someone who had been sitting at our family dinner table for years.
