Naomi’s Five Words Stopped Roland’s Wedding Cold

PART 2 — Naomi’s Five Words Stopped Roland’s Wedding Cold

Naomi looked directly at Roland.

Then she looked at the woman standing beside him in her wedding dress.

Finally, she squeezed both children’s hands.

“They’re your children, Roland.”

Nobody moved.

The music stopped.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

Roland stared at the twins as if the entire courtyard had suddenly disappeared.

“How old are they?”

“Four.”

His face turned completely white.

“You knew?”

Naomi shook her head.

“I found out after you threw me out.”

Roland took a step toward her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Naomi’s expression didn’t change.

“I tried.”

That answer hit him harder than anything else.

“You tried?”

“I called your office.”

“I sent letters.”

“I even came to your old apartment.”

“You never answered.”

Roland looked toward his assistant.

The assistant suddenly became very interested in the floor.

Naomi noticed.

“So did she.”

Roland’s jaw tightened.

“You’re saying someone stopped me from knowing?”

Naomi pulled an old envelope from her purse.

“I kept every letter.”

She handed one to him.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Inside was a photograph of the twins as newborns.

On the back was a date.

Four years earlier.

Roland stared at it.

Then he looked at the children again.

The little boy was holding a toy airplane.

The girl was hiding slightly behind Naomi.

Roland slowly knelt.

“Hi.”

The boy didn’t answer.

“I’m Roland.”

The little girl looked at him.

“Are you our daddy?”

The question shattered whatever composure he had left.

Roland’s eyes filled with tears.

“I think I am.”

Naomi immediately stepped forward.

“You don’t get to decide that today.”

Roland stood.

“Naomi, please.”

“No.”

She looked around at the guests.

“I didn’t come here to ruin your wedding.”

Roland’s bride finally spoke.

“Then why did you come?”

Naomi turned toward her.

“Because my children deserved to know the truth.”

The bride looked at Roland.

“You have children?”

Roland didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

She slowly removed her engagement ring.

Roland stared at her.

“Please don’t.”

She shook her head.

“You invited your ex-wife here to humiliate her.”

Then she looked at the twins.

“And now I understand why.”

She placed the ring in Roland’s hand.

“I won’t marry a man who treats people like disposable objects.”

She walked away.

The guests began whispering.

Roland didn’t follow her.

Instead, he looked at Naomi.

“What do you want?”

Naomi smiled sadly.

“Nothing.”

“You don’t want money?”

“No.”

“The house?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

She pointed toward the twins.

“I want you to understand that they are not evidence of your success.”

“They are not an inconvenience.”

“And they are certainly not something you can claim because you suddenly discovered you have children.”

Roland looked down.

For the first time in five years, he seemed to understand what he had done.

Then an older man stepped out from the crowd.

Roland’s attorney.

He was carrying a thick folder.

“Roland,” he said quietly.

“What?”

“You need to know something.”

Roland frowned.

The attorney looked toward Naomi.

“I reviewed the old financial records this morning.”

Naomi’s expression changed.

“What records?”

The attorney hesitated.

“Your divorce settlement.”

Roland’s face went pale.

“What about it?”

The attorney opened the folder.

“Naomi didn’t leave this marriage with nothing.”

Roland stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

“The company you built five years ago wasn’t entirely yours.”

Naomi looked confused.

The attorney continued.

“Before your marriage, Naomi inherited a small investment portfolio.”

“During the marriage, those investments were used to fund the company.”

Roland’s face changed.

“You knew about this?”

Naomi shook her head.

“No.”

The attorney looked at her.

“Your original contribution was worth very little compared with the company today.”

“But legally, you may be entitled to a substantial portion of its current value.”

The courtyard went silent again.

Roland looked at Naomi.

“How much?”

The attorney closed the folder.

“Enough to make the woman you called worthless considerably wealthier than you are today.”

Naomi stared at him.

Then she looked at Roland.

But before anyone could speak, her daughter tugged on her dress.

“Mommy?”

Naomi knelt.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

The little girl whispered:

“Is that why Daddy sent you away?”

Naomi’s heart broke.

She looked at Roland.

And for the first time, he had no answer.
