Part 2 — Naomi’s Two Words Stopped Roland’s Wedding Cold
Roland stared at the two children.
The little boy had his exact dark eyes.
The little girl had the same dimple that appeared whenever he smiled.
He looked at Naomi.
“Who are they?”
Naomi didn’t raise her voice.
She didn’t need to.
She simply answered,
“Your children.”
The courtyard went completely silent.
The bride’s smile disappeared.
The senator slowly turned toward Roland.
“What is she talking about?”
Roland couldn’t answer.
His eyes moved between the twins.
Five years.
Five years since he had thrown Naomi out.
Five years since he had told himself she was worthless.
And all that time, he had never known he had two children.
Naomi took a step forward.
“You invited me here to humiliate me.”
Roland swallowed.
“I didn’t know.”
“You didn’t ask.”
His face tightened.
“You never told me.”
Naomi laughed softly.
“I tried.”
That sentence changed everything.
She reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.
“I sent you this six weeks after I left.”
Roland stared at it.
“What is it?”
“The ultrasound.”
He opened it with shaking hands.
Two tiny images were clipped to the paper.
Underneath them was a handwritten note.
“You have two children coming. I hope one day you’ll want to meet them.”
Roland looked toward his mother.
She suddenly looked away.
Naomi noticed.
“So she never told you either?”
Roland turned.
“Mom?”
His mother said nothing.
Naomi continued.
“I called your office. Your assistant told me you didn’t want to hear from me.”
Roland’s face hardened.
“I never said that.”
“I know.”
She pulled out another document.
A copy of the letter his attorney had sent her.
It told her never to contact Roland or his family again.
The senator’s daughter looked at Roland.
“You did this?”
Roland shook his head.
“I thought she left me.”
Naomi looked at him.
“You threw me out with two garbage bags.”
He had no response.
Then the little girl tugged Naomi’s dress.
“Mom, is that Daddy?”
Everyone heard her.
Roland closed his eyes.
When he opened them, tears were running down his face.
He walked toward the children slowly.
“What’s your name?”
The little boy answered,
“Evan.”
“And you?”
“Ella.”
Roland smiled through tears.
“I’m Roland.”
Ella tilted her head.
“Are you our dad?”
He couldn’t speak.
Naomi stepped closer.
“You wanted to know why I came?”
Roland nodded.
“I didn’t come for your money.”
“I know.”
“I didn’t come to ruin your wedding.”
He looked toward his bride.
“I know.”
“I came because my children deserved to know the truth.”
The bride suddenly stepped forward.
“Roland, we need to talk.”
He turned.
She was crying.
“You told me you had no children.”
“I didn’t know.”
“But she knew.”
Everyone looked at Naomi.
Naomi shook her head.
“I knew.”
The bride stared at Roland.
“Then why did you invite her?”
Roland looked ashamed.
“I wanted her to see what she lost.”
Naomi smiled sadly.
“You were right about one thing.”
Roland looked at her.
“I did lose something.”
His expression changed.
“You lost me.”
She took her children’s hands.
“But I gained them.”
That was when the ceremony coordinator quietly approached the senator.
“The guests are waiting.”
The senator looked at Roland.
“Do you still want to get married?”
Roland stared at Naomi and the twins.
Then he looked at his bride.
“I don’t know.”
The bride removed her engagement ring.
“I do.”
She placed it in his hand.
“I won’t marry a man who spends his wedding day discovering the family he abandoned.”
She walked away.
The guests began whispering.
But Naomi didn’t stay to watch the humiliation.
She turned toward the car.
Before she reached it, Roland called her name.
“Naomi.”
She stopped.
“Can I see them?”
She looked at the twins.
Then back at him.
“Not because you’re rich.”
“I understand.”
“Not because you’re suddenly sorry.”
He nodded.
“And not because you think being their father gives you the right to walk into their lives whenever you want.”
Roland’s eyes filled with tears.
“What do I have to do?”
Naomi looked at him for a long moment.
“Earn it.”
Then she walked away.
That night, Roland sat alone in the mansion he had built to prove he had won.
But for the first time, his wealth meant nothing.
Because the two people he had never known existed were asleep hundreds of miles away.
And on his desk sat the ultrasound photograph he’d almost never seen.
But there was one thing Naomi didn’t know.
Before Roland’s wedding invitations had ever been sent, someone had already warned him that Naomi might appear.
Someone inside his own family had known about the twins for five years.
And the next morning, Roland received an anonymous message containing one photograph.
It showed Naomi pregnant.
Standing beside a man Roland had never seen before.
Under the photograph were six words:
“Ask her who the children’s real father is.”
