PART 2 — THE NIGHT MY EX-HUSBAND REALIZED HE HAD LOST EVERYTHING
Michael stared at the declined receipt.
Then he looked at the waiter.
“Try it again.”
The waiter hesitated.
“Sir, we’ve already attempted the transaction three times.”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“Then call the bank.”
Vanessa leaned toward him.
“Michael, what’s happening?”
“Nothing.”
He pulled out his phone.
But before he could make the call, another employee approached the table.
“Mr. Bennett, I’m afraid we have a problem.”
“What now?”
“The membership account has been suspended.”
Michael froze.
“What membership account?”
“The corporate account associated with Bennett & Salazar Interiors.”
Vanessa slowly removed her sunglasses.
“But that’s his company.”
The employee shook his head.
“Actually, sir, according to our records, you’re no longer an authorized user.”
Michael’s face changed.
“What?”
He immediately called the company finance office.
No answer.
He called again.
Nothing.
Then his phone buzzed.
A notification appeared.
Corporate card access revoked.
Another notification arrived.
Secondary card access revoked.
Then another.
Business account authorization removed.
Michael stared at the screen.
For the first time that evening, Vanessa saw fear in his eyes.
“Michael… what did you do?”
He looked at her.
“What did I do?”
“You said everything was yours.”
“It was.”
“Then why can’t you pay for dinner?”
The people at nearby tables had started watching.
Michael lowered his voice.
“Don’t make a scene.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“I’m not the one who can’t pay the bill.”
The waiter returned.
“Sir, we’ll need another form of payment.”
Michael reached into his wallet.
His personal card was declined too.
He tried another.
Declined.
A third.
Declined.
The room became strangely quiet.
Then someone at the next table whispered:
“Isn’t that Michael Bennett?”
Another person turned.
“I think it is.”
Michael’s face turned red.
He stood abruptly.
“Put the bill on my account.”
The manager stepped forward.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Bennett. Your account has been suspended as well.”
Michael stared at him.
“Who authorized that?”
The manager looked at his tablet.
“Mrs. Salazar.”
Michael’s expression went blank.
“My ex-wife?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa suddenly grabbed his arm.
“Michael, what is going on?”
He pulled away.
“Stay out of this.”
She stared at him.
“You brought me here.”
“And?”
“You promised me this was all yours.”
Michael didn’t answer.
Then his phone rang.
It was his attorney.
He answered immediately.
“What happened?”
The attorney’s voice was unusually serious.
“Michael, where are you?”
“At the Sapphire Room.”
“You need to leave immediately.”
“Why?”
“Because your former wife filed emergency restrictions on every account connected to the business.”
Michael swallowed.
“What does that mean?”
“It means you cannot access the company funds.”
“And the personal accounts?”
“Those are being reviewed too.”
Michael’s eyes widened.
“Reviewed for what?”
There was a pause.
Then his attorney said:
“Fraudulent transfers.”
Michael went completely silent.
Vanessa stared at him.
“What did he say?”
Michael slowly lowered the phone.
Then another notification appeared.
This one wasn’t from the bank.
It was from my father.
A single message.
Check your email.
Michael opened it.
Inside was a legal document.
Attached were dozens of transactions.
Luxury hotels.
Jewelry.
Private flights.
Designer purchases.
Transfers to Vanessa.
Payments made while Michael was still married to me.
And beside every transaction was a date.
A date showing exactly when the money had been taken from company accounts.
Michael’s hands started shaking.
Then he saw the final page.
At the bottom was a statement from my father’s former federal fraud investigation office.
Michael whispered:
“No.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“What?”
He looked at her.
“They knew.”
“Who?”
“My ex-wife.”
“And her father.”
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“What did they know?”
Michael didn’t answer.
Because suddenly he understood something much worse.
My father hadn’t told me to block the cards because he suspected Michael might steal money.
He had told me because he already knew Michael had been stealing money.
For months.
Maybe even years.
And the divorce hadn’t been the end of the investigation.
It had been the beginning.
Then the private club’s main doors opened.
Two investigators walked inside.
They approached Michael’s table.
“Mr. Bennett?”
Michael slowly stood.
“Yes?”
“You need to come with us.”
Vanessa stepped back.
“Why?”
One investigator looked at her.
“We’ll need to speak with you as well.”
Michael’s eyes widened.
“On what grounds?”
The investigator handed him a folder.
“Financial fraud, unauthorized transfers, and suspected misappropriation of company funds.”
The entire room went silent.
Vanessa looked at Michael in disbelief.
“You told me she had nothing.”
Michael couldn’t even look at her.
Because he finally understood.
My father had been right.
Michael hadn’t just walked away from my love.
He had walked away from the woman who had spent years building the company he thought he could take from her.
And now every dollar he had tried to use that night was being traced back to him.
But the worst part was still waiting.
Because when investigators opened the company’s oldest financial records the next morning, they discovered a transfer worth $1.8 million that Michael had made nearly seven years earlier.
And the name attached to that transfer wasn’t Vanessa’s.
It belonged to someone neither of us had ever suspected.
Someone who had been secretly helping Michael hide money since the beginning of our marriage.
Someone my father already knew.
