PART 2 — THE SECRET WAITING UNDER THE OLD TREE

PART 2 — THE SECRET WAITING UNDER THE OLD TREE

I stayed inside my car for several seconds, unable to move.

Ethan was standing beside the old tree.

But he wasn’t alone.

There was a small wooden bench beneath the branches.

And sitting on it was an elderly woman.

She looked fragile.

Her silver hair moved gently in the afternoon wind.

I watched as Ethan walked toward her and placed a grocery bag beside her.

Then he sat down.

My first thought was the worst possible one.

Who was she?

And why had my husband been secretly visiting her?

I stepped out of my car.

“Ethan?”

He turned.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Claire?”

The elderly woman looked at me.

Then she began to cry.

Ethan stood immediately.

“You followed me?”

“Yes,” I said.

My voice trembled.

“You turned off your location every time you came here. You changed your passcode. You lied about where you were going.”

Ethan looked down.

“I know.”

“Who is she?”

The woman slowly stood.

“My name is Ruth.”

She looked at Ethan.

“He never told you about me?”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

My heart sank.

“Why?”

Ethan took a deep breath.

“Because I was ashamed.”

The word confused me.

“Ashamed of what?”

He pointed toward the tree.

“There’s something buried underneath it.”

I stared at the ground.

“What?”

“Something my father left behind.”

Ethan explained that when he was a teenager, his father had disappeared from their family without warning.

Everyone believed he had simply abandoned them.

But shortly before Ethan’s father died, he left Ethan a letter.

The letter contained one instruction.

Find Ruth.

Ethan had spent years searching for her.

Eventually, he discovered that Ruth had been living alone outside Bellmere.

She was the woman who had known his father before he married Ethan’s mother.

But she wasn’t his father’s secret girlfriend.

She was his father’s younger sister.

Ethan’s aunt.

And she had been protecting a secret for decades.

I looked at Ruth.

“What secret?”

She reached into her coat and pulled out an old envelope.

“This.”

She handed it to me.

The paper was faded.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of a young man standing beside the same tree.

Ethan’s father.

Behind the photograph was a handwritten message.

I didn’t leave my family. I was forced to disappear.

I looked at Ethan.

“What does that mean?”

He swallowed.

“My father believed someone was trying to destroy our family.”

Ruth nodded.

“He had discovered something about a business deal involving people he trusted.”

Then she looked at me.

“And before he disappeared, he hid the evidence.”

My eyes moved toward the tree.

“The evidence is buried here?”

Ruth nodded.

Ethan knelt beside the tree and began clearing away the leaves.

My heart pounded.

After several minutes, his fingers hit something hard.

He pulled out a small metal box.

The box was covered in dirt and rust.

Ethan opened it carefully.

Inside were old photographs, bank statements, letters…

and one final envelope.

My name was written on it.

I froze.

“Why is my name on that?”

Ethan looked just as shocked as I was.

“I don’t know.”

I opened the envelope.

There was only one page inside.

I read the first sentence.

Then my knees nearly gave out.

Because the letter wasn’t written by Ethan’s father.

It was written by someone who knew our family.

Someone who had been watching Ethan for years.

And the final line said:

If Ethan ever has children, keep them away from the person who betrayed us.

I looked at my husband.

Our twin boys were only four months old.

Suddenly, this wasn’t about an old family secret anymore.

Someone had known about our children before they were even born.

And whoever wrote that letter was still alive.
