PART 2 — THE TRUTH BEHIND ETHAN’S SECRET

PART 2 — THE TRUTH BEHIND ETHAN’S SECRET

The officer reached into his folder and pulled out a photograph.

He handed it to me.

I looked down at the picture.

It showed Sophie sitting in a brand-new wheelchair.

For a moment, I felt relieved.

Then I noticed the date.

The photograph had been taken that morning.

“But I don’t understand,” I said. “Ethan sold his guitar to help Sophie. Why are you here?”

The younger officer looked at Ethan.

“Because your son did something yesterday that surprised everyone at the station.”

I turned toward my son.

“What did you do, Ethan?”

He swallowed hard.

“I found out where Sophie’s new wheelchair was supposed to come from.”

The officers explained that Sophie’s family had been waiting for months for a replacement wheelchair through a local assistance program.

But something had gone wrong.

The wheelchair had been approved.

It had even been delivered.

Yet Sophie never received it.

Instead, someone had signed for it and taken it away.

Ethan had discovered this while trying to find a way to help Sophie.

He had gone to the school office.

He had asked questions.

He had even spoken to the company that supplied the wheelchair.

And eventually, he found a name.

A name that made my heart stop.

I recognized it immediately.

It belonged to a man who worked at our school.

A man I had seen many times.

The officer looked at me carefully.

“Your son believed something was wrong, so he brought us the information he found.”

I looked at Ethan.

“You went to the police by yourself?”

He nodded.

“I was scared, Mom. But Sophie needed that wheelchair.”

My eyes filled with tears.

Then the older officer said something I will never forget.

“Ma’am, your son didn’t just sell his guitar.”

“He uncovered a situation that could have left a disabled child without the equipment she desperately needed.”

I pulled Ethan into my arms.

But the officer wasn’t finished.

“There’s one more thing.”

He handed me another photograph.

It showed the wheelchair sitting inside a storage room.

And standing beside it…

was the person who had signed for it.

I stared at the photograph in disbelief.

Because I knew that person.

And suddenly, the reason behind those two officers standing at my front door became painfully clear.

Ethan had thought he was simply helping a classmate.

But his kindness had uncovered something much bigger.

And the next person the officers were going to question…

was someone none of us expected.
