PART 2 — The Audit Revealed What Austin Had Been Hiding From Everyone
Austin stood at the foot of my hospital bed, still smiling.
His mother folded her arms.
“You’ve always been dramatic,” she said. “Now you’re threatening divorce because you don’t want to cook?”
I looked at both of them.
I said nothing.
Then my phone vibrated.
One message.
JONATHAN: AUDIT COMPLETE. YOU NEED TO SEE THIS.
I opened the encrypted report.
My stomach dropped.
Austin wasn’t simply abusing his position.
He had been secretly diverting company contracts to a private consulting firm registered under his mother’s name.
Millions of dollars had passed through accounts that should never have existed.
And there was more.
Expense reports.
Luxury hotel bills.
Personal purchases.
Payments disguised as “regional business development.”
Jonathan had attached copies of everything.
I looked up at Austin.
“Do you remember telling me you were untouchable?”
He laughed.
“Because I am.”
I turned my phone toward him.
His smile disappeared.
“What is that?”
“Your employment audit.”
His mother stepped closer.
“Don’t threaten my son.”
I looked at her.
“I’m not threatening him.”
I paused.
“I’m showing him the evidence.”
Austin grabbed the phone from my hand.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
His face became completely white.
“Where did you get this?”
I smiled.
“From the company you claim to control.”
He stared at me.
“You don’t have access to corporate records.”
I looked directly into his eyes.
“Oh, Austin.”
I finally decided it was time.
“You’ve been asking yourself the wrong question.”
His eyebrows tightened.
“What does that mean?”
I reached for my phone again.
“Jonathan, send the ownership certificate.”
Thirty seconds later, the document appeared.
I placed the phone on the bed.
Austin stared at it.
Then his mother stared at it.
Then both of them looked at me.
At the top of the document was my legal name.
And beneath it:
Chairwoman and Majority Shareholder — Apex Logistics.
Austin stopped breathing.
His mother whispered:
“That can’t be real.”
I looked at her.
“You’ve been eating at my table, insulting me in my own home, and demanding that I serve you.”
I glanced at Austin.
“And you’ve been bragging about being a Regional Director while working for me.”
He took a step backward.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No, that’s impossible.”
I nodded toward the document.
“Fifty-one percent ownership.”
Austin’s knees suddenly gave out.
He grabbed the side of the hospital bed to keep from falling.
“You knew?”
“I’ve known for years.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
I looked down at my cast.
“Because I wanted to know whether you loved me when you thought I had nothing.”
He couldn’t answer.
Then Jonathan called.
I put the phone on speaker.
“Madam Chairwoman,” he said, “there’s one more issue.”
Austin looked terrified.
Jonathan continued.
“We found evidence suggesting Austin authorized several fraudulent reimbursements and instructed employees to destroy supporting documents.”
Austin’s mother covered her mouth.
Jonathan added quietly:
“We’ve preserved the records. Federal investigators can receive them whenever you authorize it.”
Austin suddenly dropped to his knees.
“Please.”
I looked at him.
He was crying now.
“Please don’t call the FBI.”
His mother began begging too.
I sat there quietly.
For three years, they had treated me like I was worthless.
Now, for the first time, they were looking at me differently.
Not as Austin’s wife.
Not as the woman who cooked their meals.
Not as someone they could control.
But as the woman who had the power to end everything they had built.
I took a slow breath.
Then I said:
“Austin, I don’t want your job.”
He looked up hopefully.
“I don’t want your money.”
His expression changed.
“I don’t even want revenge.”
I paused.
“I want the truth.”
And then Jonathan sent me one final file.
It contained a message Austin had sent to an executive just two days before my accident.
The message explained exactly what he planned to do with the company…
once he believed his wife could no longer stand in his way.
