PART 2 — The Blue Tarp Revealed What Patricia Had Been Hiding
The garage went completely silent when the officers pulled the blue tarp away.
I was standing across the street behind the police tape, trying to see what had made everyone react so strongly.
Then one officer stepped backward.
Another immediately reached for his radio.
Patricia covered her face.
I couldn’t understand what I was looking at.
It wasn’t a body.
It wasn’t a weapon.
It was an old wooden boat.
But underneath it was something far more disturbing.
A license plate.
One that belonged to a missing man’s truck.
The same truck that had disappeared from our neighborhood six months earlier.
I remembered the story.
His name was Daniel Harper.
He lived three streets away.
One evening, he left home to pick up groceries.
He never came back.
His truck had vanished too.
Police had searched for weeks.
Nothing.
Until my doorbell camera captured that hooded person walking toward my porch.
One officer came over to me.
“Ma’am, we need to ask you something.”
“About Patricia?”
He shook his head.
“About Daniel.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does she have to do with him?”
The officer looked toward the garage.
“We found parts of his truck inside.”
I stared at the building.
“Parts?”
“License plate. Interior panels. Personal belongings.”
Then he lowered his voice.
“And something else.”
He showed me a photograph.
It was a small metal box.
Inside were several keys, photographs, and handwritten notes.
One photograph showed Daniel standing beside Patricia.
They weren’t neighbors.
They had known each other before.
Much better than anyone realized.
The police later discovered that Patricia had been involved in a dispute with Daniel over a property boundary.
Daniel had apparently threatened to report her for illegally using part of his land.
Then he disappeared.
But the strangest discovery came next.
The scratches on my door hadn’t been random vandalism.
Police found the same unusual white paint on Patricia’s work gloves.
They also found a camera memory card in her garage.
It contained footage from several nights.
Including the night Daniel disappeared.
I felt sick.
But then the detective showed me something that made my heart pound.
My house appeared in one of the videos.
Patricia had been watching my property.
Not because she hated my green door.
Because my camera had accidentally captured something she desperately wanted to know whether police could see.
The night Daniel disappeared, her car had passed my house.
At 1:47 a.m.
And my camera had recorded it.
She had been trying to determine whether my security system still worked.
The detective looked at me.
“Your door may have saved this case.”
I couldn’t believe it.
Then Patricia suddenly shouted from the driveway.
“You don’t understand!”
Everyone turned.
She was crying.
“I didn’t hurt Daniel!”
The detective asked, “Then why did you have his belongings?”
Patricia shook her head.
“Because someone gave them to me.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
Then she looked directly across the street.
At another house.
My neighbor’s house.
I felt a chill.
“Who lives there?”
The detective’s expression changed.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”
Patricia suddenly whispered a name.
“Daniel’s brother.”
I froze.
Because Daniel’s brother had been one of the people on television begging for information about his disappearance.
And according to Patricia…
he had visited her garage the night before Daniel vanished.
Then her phone rang.
An officer answered it.
His face changed after hearing the caller.
He looked at Patricia.
Then at me.
“We just found Daniel Harper.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
The officer paused.
“Alive.”
Everyone went silent.
Then he added:
“And he has been trying to contact Patricia for months.”
Patricia began sobbing.
But before anyone could ask another question, the detective looked at me.
“There’s one problem.”
“What?”
“Daniel says the person who caused all of this isn’t Patricia.”
He glanced toward the neighboring houses.
“He says it was someone who knew exactly how to make everyone blame her.”
And suddenly, I realized my front door had never been the real target.
I had been.
