THE BOX MEREDITH LEFT BEHIND

THE BOX MEREDITH LEFT BEHIND

Inside the box was a small envelope with my name written in Meredith’s handwriting.

I stared at it for several seconds before finally opening it.

There were only three pages inside.

The first line made my heart stop.

“If you’re reading this, then I’m no longer there to explain what happened.”

I had to put the letter down.

For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.

Then I kept reading.

Meredith wrote that she had been keeping something from me for almost two years.

Not because she had stopped loving me.

Not because she wanted to leave.

She had been trying to protect our children.

At the bottom of the second page was a name I recognized immediately.

A man who had been part of Meredith’s life long before she met me.

I read the name twice.

Then I noticed a photograph tucked behind the letter.

It showed Meredith standing beside him.

But that wasn’t what frightened me.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

It was taken only three weeks before Meredith and I had met.

I turned the photograph over again, staring at her face.

Then I found the final page.

Meredith had written:

“There is something about the children that you deserve to know. But please, before you confront anyone, check the blue folder in my mother’s house.”

My hands began shaking.

Why would Meredith mention her mother?

And why had Sandra never said anything about a blue folder?

I immediately called her.

She answered after the third ring.

“Sandra, Meredith left me a letter.”

There was silence.

Then her voice changed.

“What did she tell you?”

I froze.

It wasn’t the question of a grieving mother.

It sounded like fear.

“I need to know about the blue folder,” I said.

Another long silence followed.

Finally, Sandra whispered:

“Then Meredith must have known she was running out of time.”

That sentence changed everything.

Because suddenly I realized the box wasn’t simply a goodbye from my wife.

It was a warning.

And whatever Meredith had discovered before she died…

someone had been desperately trying to keep it from me.
