The emergency room doctors confirmed Maya’s surgical incision had become severely infected

The emergency room doctors confirmed Maya’s surgical incision had become severely infected because she had been left to tend to the baby alone, forcing her muscles to tear. Liam was treated for mild hypothermia. As they were both finally stabilized and tucked into warm hospital beds, I sat in the waiting room, pulled out my laptop, and logged into our apartment’s hidden security camera feed.
What I saw on the footage made my blood run cold.
Two days after I left for Germany, my mother Eleanor, my sister Chloe, and her husband Mark arrived at our apartment. They didn’t come to help. The cameras showed them systematically emptying our kitchen, loading all the premium groceries, expensive cuts of meat, and high-end baby supplies I had bought into large cooler bags.
But the betrayal went much deeper. I watched my mother corner Maya in the hallway while she was visibly clutching her stomach in pain. Eleanor snatched Maya’s phone directly out of her hand, saying, “You don’t need to be whining to David while he’s working. He earns the money, and we decide how it’s spent.” Mark was in the background, laughing as he carried my laptop and camera gear out of the apartment to “borrow” it for their trip. They literally stripped my home bare, locked the thermostat so Maya couldn’t raise the heat, and drove off to the airport using the fourteen thousand dollars I had wired them for Maya’s medical care.
The next morning, New Year’s Day, my phone began blowing up. The first call was from Chloe, screaming that her credit card had been declined at a luxury boutique in Miami. Then my mother called, demanding to know why the resort suite could no longer be charged to my account.
“David! What is the meaning of this?” Eleanor huffed over the speaker. “We are stranded at the hotel desk! Fix this immediately!”
“You’re not stranded, Mother. You’re broke,” I said, my voice dead calm. “I’m standing in the hospital right now. Maya is on an IV drip for an infection, and Liam was treated for hypothermia. I watched the camera footage. I saw you steal the food, the baby’s formula, and lock the thermostat.”
“Oh, don’t be so dramatic,” Eleanor scoffed, trying to dismiss it. “Maya is just lazy. We took a well-deserved family vacation. You owe us that money anyway!”
“I don’t owe you anything,” I replied. “And you aren’t a family anymore. You’re suspects.”
I hung up and handed the downloaded security footage, the photos of Maya’s injuries, and the financial statements showing the stolen medical funds directly to the police precinct in Brooklyn. Because they had crossed state lines with stolen property and committed grand larceny with the funds, the police took it incredibly seriously.
When Eleanor, Chloe, and Mark flew back to New York a few days later, expecting to argue with me, they were met at the baggage claim by police officers. All three were arrested on charges of grand larceny, fraud, and reckless endangerment.
I immediately filed for a permanent restraining order and put our Park Slope apartment up for sale to move Maya and Liam to a beautiful, quiet home upstate, far away from their toxicity. My mother and sister begged me to drop the charges, crying that jail would ruin their lives, but I blocked their numbers. They wanted to live like royalty at the expense of my wife and child’s lives—now, they can learn what it’s like to live in a cell.
