“Uncle Richard,” I said quietly into my earpiece, standing just out of sight behind a heavy velvet curtain. “It’s time. They just openly confessed to the asset diversion. Bring them in.”
Uncle Richard wasn’t just my favorite relative; he was the Regional Director of the Criminal Investigation Division for the IRS. For the last forty-eight hours, while Clint thought I was grading papers, my team had been building a foolproof, ironclad case against him and Meredith Sterling. We had tracked every single dollar of the $12 million they had illegally funneled out of Sterling Logistics into an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands—the exact funds Clint was currently using to buy that $200,000 diamond ring.
I stepped out from behind the curtain and walked calmly toward their private VIP booth. Clint was right in the middle of sliding the sparkling diamond onto Meredith’s finger when he caught sight of me.
His face instantly turned completely white. His jaw dropped, and he scrambled to hide the ring box behind a champagne bucket.
“Sarah?!” Clint stammered, his voice cracking with a mixture of anger and panic. “What the hell are you doing here? I told you this was a high-profile corporate event! You don’t belong in a place like this. Look at how you’re dressed! Get out before you completely ruin my career!”
Meredith leaned back, looking me up and down with absolute disgust. “Clint, is this the simple little schoolteacher you’re always complaining about? Security! Get this middle-class woman out of my sight.”
I didn’t yell. I didn’t break down into tears. I simply reached into my trench coat, pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder containing the official federal seizure warrants, and tossed it right onto their marble table, knocking over their expensive champagne glasses.
“The security guards won’t be helping you tonight, Meredith,” I said, my voice echoing coldly across the elite room. “And I haven’t been teaching school children for a very long time. I am Special Agent Sarah Vance, lead investigator for the Federal Financial Crimes Task Force.”
Right on cue, the heavy oak doors of The Obsidian Room were violently thrown open. A dozen tactical federal agents in body armor poured into the exclusive club, their weapons drawn, completely freezing the entire high-society crowd.
Clint attempted to jump out of his seat. “Sarah, wait! This is a massive misunderstanding! Meredith forced me to help her with the corporate accounts! I love you, honey, I was going to bring you into the investments!”
“Save your breath, Clint,” I interrupted, gesturing to the agents. “We tapped your phone text history days ago. We know all about your plans to get your ‘boring wife’ out of the way. We also know you used my personal signature to forge the secondary indemnity bonds.”
Uncle Richard stepped into the booth, flanked by two agents carrying handcuffs. He looked down at Clint with a tight smile. “Clint Carter, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, corporate money laundering, and identity theft. Step away from the table.”
Meredith screamed as an agent aggressively pulled her arms behind her back, the cold steel of handcuffs clicking loudly over her designer bracelets. Clint fell out of his chair, weeping openly on the club floor as his entire 5-year illusion of wealth and arrogance shattered into absolute nothingness. I reached down, casually picked up the $200,000 diamond ring box from behind the ice bucket, and slipped it into my pocket.
“Consider this a down payment on the asset forfeiture, Clint,” I whispered as the agents dragged him past the stunned elite crowd and straight into the waiting police cruisers outside. Arrogance is a very expensive trait, but underestimating your wife will cost you your freedom for the next twenty-five years.
