The Photograph My Father Never Wanted Me to See

PART 2 — The Photograph My Father Never Wanted Me to See

Two years and seven months.

I stared at Lily as the numbers rearranged themselves in my head.

The timing was impossible to ignore.

Claire and I had separated just over three years ago.

But there had been one night, shortly before everything fell apart, when Claire had come to my apartment crying.

She had tried to tell me something.

I hadn’t listened.

My father had called repeatedly that evening, demanding I attend an important family dinner.

I chose my family.

I chose silence.

And now a little girl stood in front of me with my eyes.

“Claire,” I whispered, “is she mine?”

Her expression hardened.

“You don’t get to ask that question now.”

“Please.”

“You had your chance.”

She turned Lily away from me.

I felt as though the entire airport had suddenly become too small.

Then Sophie appeared beside me.

“Adrian, our flight boards in twenty minutes.”

Claire glanced at Sophie.

Then at the diamond ring on her finger.

Her face became strangely calm.

“Congratulations.”

“Claire—”

“I hope you’re happy.”

She picked up Lily’s small bag.

Then she walked away.

I should have followed her.

Instead, Sophie grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“You have no idea what Claire is capable of.”

Those words sounded exactly like something my father would have said.

And for the first time, I wondered why.

I boarded the plane with Sophie.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about Lily.

Halfway through the flight, my phone connected to the plane’s Wi-Fi.

One new message appeared.

No name.

No explanation.

Just a photograph.

I opened it.

My stomach dropped.

It was my father.

Thomas Vale.

Standing inside a medical-center room.

The date was clearly visible.

December 14.

Three years ago.

And standing beside him was Claire.

She was sitting on a hospital bed.

Her face was exhausted.

In her arms was a tiny newborn baby.

Lily.

I zoomed in.

My father’s hand rested on Claire’s shoulder.

Then I noticed something on the table beside them.

A folder.

Across the top was written:

VALE FAMILY MEDICAL TRUST — CONFIDENTIAL

My hands started shaking.

Why had my father been there?

And why had he been present on the day Lily was born?

I looked at the timestamp.

The photograph had been taken at 11:43 p.m.

I checked my old messages.

That same night, my father had called me six times.

I’d been at a hotel with friends.

I hadn’t answered.

A second message arrived.

This time, it wasn’t a photograph.

It said:

“Ask your father why he told you Claire lost the baby.”

I stopped breathing.

Because I remembered.

Three years earlier, when Claire disappeared from my life, my father had told me she had suffered a miscarriage.

He had said she was devastated.

He said she wanted nothing to do with me.

He even showed me a hospital document.

I had believed him.

I had never questioned it.

But Lily was alive.

And my father had been in the hospital when she was born.

I immediately called him.

He answered on the third ring.

“Adrian?”

“Dad.”

My voice sounded unfamiliar even to me.

“Where were you on December 14?”

Silence.

Then:

“Why are you asking?”

“Because I saw the photograph.”

Another silence.

“What photograph?”

“The one of you with Claire.”

I heard him inhale sharply.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“You met her, didn’t you?”

I sat frozen in my seat.

“How did you know?”

“Adrian, listen to me carefully. You cannot contact Claire again.”

“Why?”

“Because she doesn’t know the whole story.”

My heart pounded.

“What story?”

He lowered his voice.

“The child isn’t the only thing you were never supposed to find.”

Before I could respond, the call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Then Sophie touched my arm.

“Who was that?”

“My father.”

Her face changed.

“What did he say?”

I looked directly at her.

“Did you know Claire was pregnant?”

Sophie went completely still.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“I knew there had been a baby.”

My stomach turned.

“You knew?”

“I didn’t know she kept the child.”

I stared at my new wife.

“How long have you known?”

She looked away.

“My father told me before our engagement.”

Suddenly, everything clicked.

The rushed wedding.

The pressure from both families.

The insistence that Claire was dangerous.

The carefully arranged honeymoon.

The constant warnings never to contact my ex.

This marriage hadn’t been about love.

It had been about controlling the story.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, there was a scanned document attached.

I opened it.

It was Lily’s original birth certificate.

Under Father’s Name, one word appeared:

UNKNOWN.

But someone had written a note across the bottom in handwriting I recognized immediately.

My father’s.

“Keep this child away from Adrian until the Vale succession is settled.”

I felt sick.

Why would my father care about Lily’s existence?

Then I noticed the final page.

A second document.

A DNA test.

The results were dated two years earlier.

Probability of paternity: 99.98%.

My name was printed at the top.

I had never taken that test.

Someone had tested Lily against a sample that belonged to me without my knowledge.

I looked at Sophie.

She was crying silently.

Then she whispered:

“Adrian… there’s something else.”

“What?”

She reached into her handbag.

Pulled out a sealed envelope.

And placed it in my hands.

“I was told to give you this only after the wedding.”

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter from my mother.

A letter dated three years ago.

The first line destroyed whatever remained of my trust in my family:

“Adrian, if you are reading this, then your father failed to keep Lily hidden.”

I looked up.

Sophie covered her mouth.

And beneath my mother’s first sentence was another line:

“Your daughter was never the reason they separated you from Claire.”

I read the next sentence.

Then my entire world changed.

Because my mother had written that Claire had discovered something about the Vale family that could destroy my father’s empire.

And Lily…

was the only person who could prove it.
