PART 2 — The Secret They Hid From Me
Instead, he reached across the table and took Diane’s hand.
My smile disappeared.
“Mom,” Lucas said quietly, “I’m marrying Diane.”
For several seconds, I genuinely thought it was a joke.
Then Diane started crying.
My best friend of twenty years.
The woman who had sat beside me when my husband died.
The woman who had helped me raise Lucas.
She was now telling me she had been secretly involved with my son for years.
Years.
I couldn’t even process the word.
“You’ve been seeing each other behind my back?”
Lucas lowered his eyes.
“I was afraid you’d never understand.”
I stood up so quickly my chair nearly fell over.
“Understand?”
My voice shook.
“You’ve been lying to me.”
Diane reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
“Don’t.”
I walked out of that restaurant feeling as though someone had erased twenty years of my life.
But Lucas followed me into the parking lot.
“Mom, please listen.”
I turned around.
“Did you love her before or after you decided I didn’t deserve the truth?”
He couldn’t answer.
For the next several weeks, I barely spoke to either of them.
Then the wedding invitation arrived.
I almost threw it away.
But I didn’t.
I decided I would go.
Not because I approved.
Because Lucas was still my son.
So I sat in the front row while my only child married my best friend.
Diane walked down the aisle wearing a simple ivory dress.
Lucas looked happier than I had ever seen him.
I tried not to cry.
Not because I was happy.
Because I was grieving the relationship I thought I had with both of them.
The ceremony was almost over when Lucas suddenly leaned toward me.
“Mom, there’s something we never told you.”
My heart sank.
“What now?”
He glanced toward Diane.
She nodded.
Then he whispered:
“She isn’t the woman I’m marrying.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
Lucas’s face was pale.
“The wedding isn’t what you think.”
Before I could ask another question, the officiant announced that the couple would now exchange rings.
But Lucas didn’t move.
Instead, he turned toward the guests.
“I can’t continue until my mother knows the truth.”
A murmur swept through the room.
Diane began crying.
Lucas took a microphone.
“Mom, I lied to you about how our relationship started.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?”
He looked at Diane.
“She never pursued me.”
Diane shook her head.
“I tried to stop him.”
Lucas swallowed.
“I was the one who found her.”
The room became silent.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“I didn’t start dating Diane because I wanted a wife.”
He looked directly at me.
“I started dating her because I was trying to find out who killed Dad.”
I froze.
My husband had died twelve years earlier.
Everyone had believed it was a heart attack.
Lucas continued.
“For years, I suspected his death wasn’t natural.”
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid you’d get hurt.”
He explained that shortly before his death, my husband had discovered financial fraud at the company where he worked.
He had planned to expose several people.
But he died before he could.
Lucas had spent years quietly investigating.
Then he found an old connection.
Diane.
She had worked with my husband years ago.
And she knew something about his final days.
But there was more.
Lucas and Diane hadn’t been secretly dating for years.
They had been pretending to date.
They needed someone to believe they were together so they could investigate without raising suspicion.
I looked at Diane.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
She began crying.
“Because someone was watching you.”
My entire body went cold.
“Who?”
Diane looked toward the back of the church.
A man was standing near the exit.
The moment he noticed her looking, he turned around.
Lucas immediately recognized him.
“That’s him.”
Security moved toward the door.
The man ran.
Two officers chased him outside.
Everyone in the church stood frozen.
Then Lucas returned to me.
“Mom, there’s one final thing.”
I couldn’t imagine what else could possibly shock me.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out an old envelope.
It had my husband’s handwriting on it.
My hands started shaking.
“Where did you get this?”
“Diane found it six months ago.”
I opened it.
Inside was a letter addressed to me.
The first line made my heart stop.
“If you’re reading this, then Lucas has finally discovered what happened to me.”
I couldn’t breathe.
I read the next paragraph.
My husband hadn’t died from a heart attack.
He had been poisoned.
And he had known he was being targeted.
But the final sentence was the one that destroyed me.
“The person you trust most is the reason I’m gone.”
I slowly lowered the letter.
My eyes moved toward Diane.
Then toward Lucas.
Neither of them spoke.
Because suddenly, I understood.
The person my husband had warned me about wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t someone from his workplace.
It was someone who had been sitting beside me at birthdays, holidays, family dinners…
Someone who had known my family for more than twenty years.
Someone I had called my best friend.
And when I looked at Diane’s face, I realized she already knew exactly who my husband had been talking about.
