PART 2 — The Tiny Mark Behind Daniel’s Ear Wasn’t an Accident
I stepped closer.
Daniel was still talking to his business partner, completely unaware that I was staring at the tiny mark behind his ear.
It wasn’t a scar.
It wasn’t a birthmark.
It was a small tattoo.
Three tiny letters.
M.R.S.
My heart stopped.
Marcus.
Those were the initials of my husband’s full name.
I stepped backward.
No.
It couldn’t be.
Marcus had been buried a year ago.
I’d watched the coffin disappear beneath the earth.
I’d held Sophie’s hand through the entire funeral.
Daniel suddenly turned.
Our eyes met.
His expression changed the moment he realized what I’d seen.
“What’s wrong?”
I pointed toward his ear.
“What is that?”
He went completely silent.
His business partner looked between us.
Daniel quietly excused himself and walked toward the house.
I followed.
“Daniel.”
He kept walking.
“Daniel, stop.”
He finally turned.
His face looked pale.
“I didn’t want you to find that.”
My heart started racing.
“Why do you have Marcus’s initials tattooed behind your ear?”
He stared at me.
Then he said something I wasn’t prepared for.
“Because Marcus asked me to put it there.”
I couldn’t breathe.
“When?”
“Before he died.”
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Marcus knew he wasn’t going to survive.”
I stared at him.
“He asked me to make you believe he was gone.”
My entire body went cold.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel looked toward the pool.
“Sophie was there.”
My daughter was playing with another child several yards away.
Daniel continued.
“Marcus was terrified that someone would find out what he had discovered.”
“What had he discovered?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he pulled out his phone.
He showed me a photograph.
It was Marcus.
Alive.
Standing in a hospital corridor.
But the date on the photograph was six weeks after his supposed death.
I stared at the screen.
“That can’t be real.”
“It is.”
I looked at Daniel.
“Where did you get this?”
“Marcus sent it to me.”
“Why?”
“Because he needed someone he trusted.”
My hands began trembling.
“Then why didn’t he contact me?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because he believed contacting you would put you in danger.”
I couldn’t understand.
“From who?”
Daniel looked around before answering.
“Someone inside your family.”
My stomach dropped.
“My family?”
He nodded.
“Marcus discovered that someone had been moving money out of his accounts.”
“Who?”
“We never found out.”
I stared at the photograph again.
“Then what happened?”
Daniel took a slow breath.
“Marcus disappeared.”
“You said he died.”
“I said that’s what everyone was told.”
My heart pounded.
“So he’s alive?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
That silence told me everything.
I covered my mouth.
“What about the funeral?”
“A body was identified.”
“Then who was in the coffin?”
Daniel looked down.
“We don’t know.”
I felt dizzy.
Then Sophie suddenly ran toward us.
She grabbed my hand.
“Mommy!”
I knelt beside her.
“What is it, sweetheart?”
She pointed at Daniel.
“Daddy said not to tell.”
Daniel froze.
I looked at him.
“Tell me what?”
Sophie reached behind Daniel’s ear.
Then she pointed to the tattoo.
“Daddy showed me that.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
I stood.
“You’ve met Marcus.”
He didn’t deny it.
“When?”
Daniel whispered:
“Three months ago.”
My heart shattered.
“You saw my husband three months ago and never told me?”
“He made me promise.”
“What promise?”
“That I wouldn’t tell you until it was safe.”
I stared at him.
“And is it safe now?”
Daniel looked toward the driveway.
A black SUV had just entered the property.
His expression changed immediately.
“No.”
“Why?”
He grabbed my arm.
“Because that car belongs to the man Marcus was investigating.”
I looked toward the SUV.
A stranger stepped out.
Then he looked directly at me.
Daniel’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“He knows you found the tattoo.”
I couldn’t move.
Then the stranger lifted his phone.
My phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One message appeared.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO SOPHIE.
I looked at my daughter.
She was staring toward the driveway.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy… Daddy said he’s coming home tonight.”
