The Woman He Thought He Could Dismiss

The Woman He Thought He Could Dismiss

The ballroom remained completely silent.

Adrian stared at me from across the room as though he were seeing a stranger.

Then Nolan handed me the microphone.

“Claire,” he said, “there is one more matter the board needs to address tonight.”

I looked at him.

“Go ahead.”

He turned toward the screen behind us.

A series of financial documents appeared.

Vendor payments.

Consulting contracts.

Luxury travel expenses.

And transfers from Crestline accounts into companies that had one thing in common.

They were controlled by Marissa Cole.

A murmur spread through the ballroom.

Marissa’s face went pale.

“That isn’t possible,” she whispered.

I looked directly at her.

“It is.”

Adrian suddenly stepped forward.

“Claire, whatever this is, we can discuss it privately.”

I shook my head.

“No. You had eleven months to discuss it with me.”

He froze.

The room went silent again.

I continued.

“The board discovered that more than two million dollars had been redirected through shell companies connected to Marissa.”

Marissa immediately turned toward Adrian.

“You told me everything was cleared!”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Stop talking.”

She stared at him.

“You said your wife knew nothing.”

I almost smiled.

“That part was true.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Claire, please.”

For the first time, his voice sounded afraid.

Chairman Mercer stepped beside me.

“The board has voted unanimously to remove Adrian Vale from his executive position, effective immediately.”

Adrian looked around the ballroom.

Nobody moved.

Not even Marissa.

Then he whispered something I could barely hear.

“You planned this.”

I met his eyes.

“No, Adrian.”

I glanced at the woman in the red gown.

“I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own decisions.”

Security approached.

As Adrian was escorted toward the exit, Marissa suddenly grabbed his arm.

“You promised me Crestline.”

He pulled away.

“You were never supposed to be part of this.”

She stared at him in disbelief.

Then she looked at me.

And I realized she still didn’t understand.

Because the financial investigation wasn’t the real reason I had waited until tonight.

There was one final document sitting inside my handbag.

A document that proved Adrian hadn’t merely betrayed me.

He had been planning to take control of Westbridge Holdings itself.

And the person who helped him had been someone I had trusted for years.
