What My Son Saw That Night Part 2:

Title: What My Son Saw That Night

Part 2:

At first, I thought Oliver was just being a child—imaginative, playful, maybe even a little tired. But the way he said it… it wasn’t playful.

He was afraid.

“Oliver,” I said gently, “that’s Mommy. You know that.”

He shook his head immediately, his small hands gripping the edge of the table. “No… that’s the creature.”

Rachel froze.

The smile on her face didn’t disappear—it just… stopped moving.

“What do you mean, sweetheart?” she asked softly.

Oliver pointed again, this time his finger trembling. “That’s not my mommy. My mommy comes at night.”

A chill ran down my spine.

I forced a laugh, trying to break the tension. “Buddy, Mommy’s right here.”

But he started crying.

“No! The real mommy comes when it’s dark. She sits by my bed and tells me to be quiet.”

The room went silent.

Rachel slowly turned to me. “He’s having a nightmare,” she said quickly. “Kids imagine things.”

But Oliver shook his head harder. “She says not to tell you,” he whispered.

That was when my stomach dropped.

I looked at Rachel again—really looked this time.

Same face.

Same voice.

But something about her expression felt… off.

Too controlled.

Too calm.

“Oliver,” I said carefully, “when does she come into your room?”

He sniffled. “After you go to sleep.”

Rachel stood up abruptly. “That’s enough. He’s confused.”

I stood too.

“No,” I said quietly. “Let him talk.”

Her eyes met mine—and for the first time in years, I didn’t recognize what I saw there.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something colder.

“He needs rest,” she said firmly.

But Oliver grabbed my arm. “Don’t let her take me tonight.”

That did it.

I picked him up immediately. “You’re sleeping in my room,” I said.

Rachel’s voice sharpened. “You’re overreacting.”

“Am I?” I asked.

Neither of us moved.

The distance between us felt wider than the room itself.

That night, I didn’t sleep.

I kept the lights on. Kept Oliver close.

And around 2:13 a.m…

I heard it.

The bedroom door handle… slowly turning.

Not loudly.

Carefully.

Like someone trying not to be heard.

My heart started pounding.

Oliver tightened his grip around me. “That’s her,” he whispered.

The door opened just a crack.

A shadow slipped through.

And in that moment…

I realized my son hadn’t been imagining anything at all.
