PART 2 — What the Children Were Really Hiding
I slowly unwrapped the plastic.
Inside was a small black flash drive.
Nothing else.
No label.
No explanation.
Just a tiny piece of plastic hidden beneath my window.
I looked toward the house next door.
The curtains were closed.
I immediately felt uneasy.
Why would two children hide a flash drive in my yard?
I carried it inside and locked the door.
For several minutes, I simply stared at it.
Then I remembered something.
My son had given me an old laptop that still worked perfectly.
I connected the flash drive.
There was only one folder.
Inside were dozens of video files.
My hands started shaking.
I opened the first one.
The screen showed my street.
But the camera angle was strange.
It was pointed directly at my house.
I opened another.
Same thing.
Another.
Same house.
My house.
The videos had been recorded at different times.
During the day.
Late at night.
Even while I was away.
Someone had been watching my home.
I felt a chill run through me.
Then I noticed the dates.
Some of the videos were more than six months old.
I opened the newest file.
It showed the children standing outside my house.
Their mother was with them.
She was speaking to someone I couldn’t see.
Then the camera zoomed slightly.
I recognized the voice.
It was my neighbor, Mr. Carter.
He had lived across the street for years.
I had always considered him friendly.
But in the video, he wasn’t smiling.
He was handing something to the children’s mother.
Then he pointed toward my house.
I paused the video.
My heart was pounding.
Why was he monitoring me?
I opened another file.
This one showed Mr. Carter standing near my mailbox at midnight.
He looked around carefully.
Then he placed an envelope inside.
I suddenly remembered.
For months, I had received strange letters.
No return address.
Sometimes just a single sentence.
“Stop asking questions.”
I had assumed they were junk mail.
Now I wasn’t so sure.
I kept watching.
Then I found a video that made my blood run cold.
It showed me leaving my house one morning.
Behind me, Mr. Carter was standing in his driveway.
He watched until my car disappeared.
Then he immediately called someone.
The audio was faint, but I could hear enough.
“She doesn’t know yet.”
A pause.
“No. The children are still doing it.”
Another pause.
“Sunday.”
My stomach dropped.
The children.
They weren’t collecting trash.
They were delivering evidence.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
Their mother had been afraid to talk to me.
The children had been quietly gathering information and hiding it where they thought no one would notice.
But why?
I kept searching the files.
Then I found one named:
“Mom — Final.”
I clicked it.
The video showed the two children sitting together in their bedroom.
The girl looked directly into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, something happened to us.”
My breath caught.
She continued.
“Mom told us never to talk to the neighbors.”
“But we know what Mr. Carter is doing.”
Her little brother looked frightened.
The girl reached for his hand.
“He has been entering people’s houses when they’re away.”
I covered my mouth.
Then she said something even worse.
“He took things from your house too.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
The video continued.
“He has keys.”
I immediately thought about the spare key I kept hidden outside.
The one under the flowerpot.
The one only a few people knew about.
I ran outside.
The key was gone.
I stood frozen beside the flowerpot.
Then I heard a sound behind me.
A car door closing.
I turned around.
Mr. Carter was standing at the end of the driveway.
He wasn’t smiling.
He simply stared at me.
Then he said:
“You found it.”
My blood went cold.
“How did you know?”
He slowly walked toward me.
“Because I know everything those children have been doing.”
I stepped backward.
“What do you want?”
He looked toward the house next door.
“They were never supposed to tell you.”
Then I heard screaming.
The children.
I ran toward their house.
Their front door was open.
Their mother was nowhere in sight.
And on the kitchen table was another black trash bag.
But this time, it wasn’t empty.
Inside was a stack of photographs.
Every photograph showed someone from our neighborhood.
Including me.
I picked up the first one.
It was taken inside my bedroom.
I dropped it immediately.
Someone had been inside my house.
Someone had been watching me for months.
Then I noticed the final photograph.
It showed me standing on my porch.
Taken that morning.
On the back, someone had written:
“She knows now.”
My phone suddenly rang.
It was the little girl’s number.
I answered.
All I heard was her whisper:
“Please don’t trust Mr. Carter.”
Then the call ended.
Seconds later, my phone received one final photograph.
It showed the children sitting inside a car.
And the man driving wasn’t Mr. Carter.
It was someone I knew.
Someone I had trusted for years.
And that’s when I realized the children’s Sunday cleanup had never been about trash.
They had been trying to leave a trail for me to follow.
A trail that led straight to the person who had been hiding the truth from all of us.
